Janet wasn't riding anyone's coattails. She said this herself many times and distanced herself from her brother until Scream where she felt more comfortable collaborating with him as she wasn't living in his shadow and was actually bigger than him that time.

It's cool that they know who Janet is, as they should since they are musicians, not the young gp.

Janet 15 years into her career was definitely known to the young GP and the new generation of popstars (teen pop) were taking so much form her - Spice Girls, *NSYNC, Britney, Jessica, Mandy etc. The new generation of popstars may compliment Beyonce, but they're not influenced by her, at least not as hevaily as Janet's influence.
Janet's career is 30+ years old, so it makes sense if the young GP don't know her. We didn't know Aretha Franklin either and she's the definition of a legend. Beyonce 30+ years into her career won't be remembered by the young GP either, so that argument can't be really used. Mind you, Janet was getting top 10 hits 15 years into her career while Beyonce can't get them anymore.

Janet's 1993 Rolling Stones cover trumps that easily. It's been 20 YEARS since that cover and it sill gets referenced to this day with Gaga's Applause video being the latest example. It's the definition of iconic. I doubt anyone will remember Single Ladies in 20 years.

I love Janet, and I think she has an incredible impact, but VERY FEW in this generation can name even one of her songs. She lacks that from other divas of her time. All the girls have that ONE song everyone will remember them by, or that ONE album, Janet has neither. The only thing people even remotely remember her by is her Nip Slip. That overshadowed her entire career.
Beyoncé - Single Ladies/Crazy In Love/Survivor/Bootylicious/Say My Name
Rihanna - WFL/Umbrella/WMN
Katy Perry - IKAG/Cali Gurls/Firework
GaGa - Poker Face/BTW
Ke$ha - TiK ToK
Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me/IKYWT
Miley Cyrus - PITUSA/WB/WCS
Britney - BOMT/OIDIA/Toxic
Nicki Minaj - Starships/Super Bass
Mariah Carey - AIWFCIY/We Belong Together
Madonna - LAP/Vogue/
Celine Dion - MHWGO
Whitney Houston - IWALY/IWDWS
Brandy - The Boy Is Mine
TLC - Waterfalls/No Scrubs
Monica - Angel of Mine
Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody?/Try Again
Carly Rae - Call Me Maybe
Adele - RITD/Someone Like You
Ashanti - Foolish
Lil Kim - Magic Stick
Avril Lavine - Girlfriend/Complicated
Alicia Keys - Fallin'/No One
Shakira - Hips Don't Lie/Whenever, Wherever
Janet - ????
All of them have that ONE or TWO songs that everyone knows, Janet doesn't have that.

*Sigh* You think the GP didn't know Janet songs when her career was as young as theirs? Most of those songs (if not all) won't be remembered by the up coming generations. You guys need to understand our generation isn't special. Those songs will be forgotten with the new generation arrives. Anyway, the industry certainly haven't forgotten Janet's ALBUMS.

Janet's career is 15 years long (1986-2001) and she is a important name since the 80s. Beyonce only became a big name in 2003. Anyway, Janet's 15 years are the most special and influential in pop history.
