A lesson for ATRL:
sex = biological
gender = personal identification / where you fit in with socially constructed roles for each sex
Transgender people don't want to "change their gender;" rather they feel that they are the wrong biological sex, and generally want that to match the gender they are. It's a distinction that more people (especially gay/bi people who are often transphobic still) need to better understand.
Personally, I feel that everyone has that right to feel comfortable in their body, and if someone knows in their heart they they were born the wrong sex, they have every right to address that. That being said, I'll admit that I'm largely clueless on transgender issues/don't have any personal experience/don't know how readily I would date a transgender individual or how I would deal with any issues that might come up. But as a member of the LGBT community (where the T is often ignored), I definitely want to learn more and become totally comfortable with it, because no one deserves to be excluded.
