I don't like it either. I think the word alone is overused and the imagery is not fun.
I wouldn't mind a ratchet-ish sound, so long as the visuals for it remained classy (a la Versailles video style).

The Hive needs to get it together.
I mean, people look like they're having bigger meltdowns than two weeks ago...

And a song like this is controversial in some respects, but really its just a very overly confident song. It's not like she said names, or used profanities that aren't common on primetime television. And whether or not we agree that this song is controversial, to me it doesn't seem forced or that it's trying to be controversial. It's not Madonna releasing a sex book or protesting a war or Britney Spears stripping onstage or Rihanna releasing a song with Chris Brown about having sex. It's just a more in-your-face style of many songs she's made before with the same idea (Ego, Upgrade U, Back Up, etc.).
|
Controversial is controversial. She knew ppl would react to this. Same way Madonna, Britney, Rihanna and Chris Brown did. Yes, but more in your face may not always a great thing. I can see why ppl are saying its too far and I agree it is. You're freaking Beyonce you don't have to say a MF'in thing. She's so much better than this

I agree in some respects. I still think it's not nearly as big of a deal as it's being made out to be. But I agree she is above this and doesn't need to do this. I would have much preferred this song if the bowing down was for some other thing not for her greatness.
The thing is though (and this is a clichéd thing to say), almost every rapper has a song like this where he declares himself great and whatever else. But I've NEVER once heard anyone hate on that. There is most definitely a double standard and we shouldn't get so mad that Beyonce does it if we are also not going to get mad at anyone else.

Because it was how I was raised and something I would never want to lose. I'm annoyed with people like Brooke Candy and Iggy Azealia pretending to be 'ratchet' so that they can be popular and make money.
But as far as Beyonce and other artists that were raised in Southern America, this was just everyday life. We were hood. It's nostalgic and makes you feel good.
But not everyone understands that. Hood and urban imagery doesn't have to be bad, but it exists. I'm all for it. I'm not completely here for another I Am.... style era where she she was pretending to be ultra polished and something that she really isn't feeling or having fun with.
The generation isn't lost. They are just finally appreciating the creativity and culture that existed in 90's and 00's working class America. It's cool.

Well put.
I think there is a difference between working class/hood and Ratchet though. They may have come to mean the same thing but I think ratchet has always been an exaggerated, extreme word used for humour.

It's just a song. OMG. Did you find "Diva" controversial too?

Beyonce doesn't need to do this, the talent speaks alone, the reason why ppl respect and love her. I can see why some people are disappointed at this record. She's too big and too damn talented of an artist to make songs like this.
|
Why don't you see the difference? Bey did that in a song/demo, she didn't do that in real life!!
You think she is too big for the lyrics or too big for the musicality because she has been doing that all her career and won't stop. And she didn't act ratchet, she made a Hip Hop song that is considered ratchet just like she has done in the past.
Frankly, there is going to be plenty more songs like those since she loves that and it's a part of her universe.

!!!! And frankly I still don't see how Beyoncé making a song that is ratchet and represents the Hip Hop scene she grown listening to in Houston (songs she has been doing her whole career) makes her suddenly ratchet.

Stop it right there. Beyonce was NOT raised in the hood, her father was making 6 figures, her mother had her own hair salon, she went to PRIVATE school, so I wouldn't use B has an example. Ghetto is not a place, it's a mentally. And with that mentally you don't make it far. You'll end up in jail or in the grave. Acting "hood" is more praised than going to
college or having class which is crazy it's viewed as boring, proving this GEN lost. It has nothing to do with where you come from its all about where you wanna go, do you wanna stay in the "hood". People need to stop using they're from the "hood" as a reason why the can't succeed in life.

I personally don't see anything wrong with the song and it's in no way contradicting her dedication to female empowerment. A strong and humble woman lashing back at hating ass celebs who have been talking down on her for years. That surely empowers me. And the fact that people (surprisingly, mainly females [Keyshia being one of these]) automatically associates the term "bitch" with being a female... What does that say?
And the fact that some think she actually wants them to get on their ashy knees and bow to her when she's clearly using that as a metaphor. Bow Down = give me the respect I deserve. She has earned the right to make songs like this. I do not care how "highly people think of her" ... If you don't like it, you don't like it and that's fine. Leave it at that.
A hit dog will holler.

What the hell is wrong with you? Don't mix things together. No one was talking about ghetto here.
I'm getting less and less the point you are trying to make. She sang a hip/hop song about commanding respect and now all of sudden she is ghetto?
It's just a song. I'm going to repeat it until you get it : it's just a damn song.

They started talking about they're come ups, so I addressed that as well. As nothing do with that song. Yes, Beyonce has done hip-hop songs they were very tasteful, but NOTHING like this.
You're right it is a song, but when others do things like this most of you (maybe not you) don't view theirs as just a song.
