Yes, the album can be certified counting digital sales as well. Think about it this way. iTunes is just like an online Wal-Mart. So the label didn't actually ship a physical copy, it's still purchased for the same amount and bought the same way. It's just not a physical copy. Otherwise, technically in Kelly's case, she'd be at like 1.3 million sales before being able to be certified.
So, yes, jp that is correct. She can be certified as soon as she hits the million status (80k from now) because she'll have officially SOLD 1m copies - be it physical or digital. IF the label had shipped 1m (obviously they haven't because she's only at 600k ish physical sales) then she could have already been certified.

Of course they count, but I was talking about getting certified based on shipments instead of sales.

I think everyone is misreading my posts.
Of course if you sell one million copies of an album, whether its physical or digital, you can be certified.
But a lot of times labels certify albums based on shipments instead of sales (like My December). And that is only possible if 1 million units were shipped. I just don't think that's the case with Stronger. Especially if she's only sold 600K+ physical copies.

Hello Kelly stans!
A lot of you might be wondering why Kelly's records weren't certified yet. I actually asked someone from Sony Music about that - and that person told me that they won't be able to certify them unless the recording artist herself insisted. That person also said that Columbia, Epic, Sony Nashville might be the only ones to be able to certify their artists without the artist insisting as they have few artists compared to RCA. In that case, Carrie might find it easier for her records to be certified.
Certification also differs worldwide such as in - Sony Music UK, which is restructuring so their artists (Kelly, One Direction) might not be certified in UK right now. Sony Music Finland, however, is now waiting for "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" to sell 1000 copies for a Gold certification. Anyway, things could change it mainly depends on the recording artist himself. Here are the artists who insisted - Train, Whitney Houston, Pitbull, JLo, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, and Usher. (Adele is mainly a XL artist so she is excluded).

No No No
It's not shipments instead of sales. It's shipments PLUS sales. It's just that when talking about physical albums, if it's been bought, it's obviously been shipped as well.

Interesting... Although I feel like that guy at Sony is just trying to cover RCA's lazy ass.

My December was certified platinum based on 1 million copies shipped. Same with Blown Away.
Neither have sold a million yet but based on shipments they have every intention two.
Though that obviously wasn't the case with My December.

Interesting. Thanks for the insight.
Kelly probably has no idea what a certification is.

Blown Away more than likely does not have one million albums shipped yet, but it DOES have a total of one million albums if you combined digital albums sold + physical albums shipped.
It's a simple formula. Let A = Digital Copies sold, B = Physical albums shipped and sold, and C = Physical albums shipped but not yet sold.
If A + B + C = 1 million+, then an album is eligible to be certified platinum.

That seems about right. Kelly doesn't care about these type of things. I sorta had a feeling that she had something to do with it.
One thing that also bothers me...... WHY THE **** DOESN'T KELLY HAVE A STAR IN THE WALK OF FAME ???

All I'm saying is that when determining certifications, digital albums bought are counted as albums SHIPPED and SOLD.

RIAA certifications do not just go by SoundScan numbers. Per their own website;
"Club sales and club free goods may be included towards certification. Product shipped to retail, mail order, record clubs, TV marketing and other ancillary markets are combined toward certified sales. All shipments to these accounts must be verified by the label"
That is why some certifications make no sense when you look at SoundScan number alone

Correct. They would both be past 1mil sold/shipped by RIAA standards. The example that people are using is Carrie. Here are her stats as of last week, " 524,825 (physical), 224,425 (digital)." So, RIAA is counting the other numbers from somewhere, like a new shipment due to it being on sale and other outlets that RIAA counts made up the difference.
Kelly likely should of been certified a while ago but we are talking about RCA. Had she been under any other label, I would bet all of her stuff would of their certifications
