Okay, long story short, I answered a question on OKCupid asking for my status and I put "HIV-" for both myself and the "Them" option (it's just an option that lets you state your preference for your ideal partner). A guy messaged me about it, because I left the question public, and started arguing with me about how that's offensive, creates a negative stigma for people with HIV, and how someone with HIV can still lead normal personal and sex lifes. And a bunch of other stuff about medications and how some people are undetectable.

He had me thinking. However, I feel like I'm not wrong. So what are your thoughts? Also would a guy having HIV be a dealbreaker for you?

It's a bit rude, I don't think anyone PREFERS their partner to have a life-long illness. It's unnecessary, you can just ask someone if they're - or + once you have at least feigned interest in a conversation.

It's not wrong of you to not want that illness to be part of your relationship - because it would be. There are huge medical advances, yes, but HIV is still a serious diagnosis that requires attention and care by both parties. If someone doesn't think they want that, I don't blame them at all.

I guess I wouldn't be opposed to dating someone with HIV if I loved them. It's kind of like, one of those things you don't really look for when looking for a partner.... For example, you don't want to date someone who has lots of body hair. Ironically you end falling in love with someone with just that. You deal with it. I feel like it's that kind of thing. I won't seek it, obviously. But I guess exceptions can be made in certain circumstances.
