I have to say that I love the academic freedom in the US in universities. You can take a course on Harry Potter novels, Beyoncé and feminism, underwater basket weaving, you name it.

Those are courses only, though. What happens when a major seems rather, nontraditional?

East Tennessee State University offers a major in Bluegrass and Country Music. I find it a bit weird to dedicate your bachelor's degree to the history of country (it sounds more of a PhD subject within a media studies field)

My school has a Sexuality Studies major. That in itself isn't strange, but there's also a Women's, Gender, and Sexuality major. What's the difference I wonder.

It's a liberal arts major with influence from the school of natural sciences. It's so hard to explain and none of the students really get it anyways Regardless it's the third best honors program in the country!

I studied contemporary pop music, which many would say is a weird thing to study. But I got my degree out if it and really enjoyed it. I don't need to see it as a waste of money either, since college and university is free in my country and you can take as many courses as you wish in your lifetime for no extra charge, so it's easy for me to want to study something else in the future, if I decide to.
