I do think it's a social issue. But I think, as animals, we might tend to get natural defense thoughts and attitudes against people who are different from us.
I lived in New Hampshire for an entire year where it's 96% white and we only had like 6 African American people in my high school. My brain always automatically defined them as the African American kids each and every single time I saw them, it wasn't bad or racist and I actually really liked them but the way my brain reacted to their race was involuntary.
If I were in a high school in some city in a major state, this wouldn't have lasted, and it just explains why diversity is so important and why affirmative action is actually a really good thing. #FeelTheBern.
