I think before stopping use of Chrome, reset your PRAM and SMC first:

Use Chrome for one week and see if it happens again. If it doesn't, you're probably fine. If it does, reset PRAM and SMC again and use Safari for the next week. If you have the same problem after that, take it to the Apple store.
Graphic glitches of any kind can happen, and I'm sure this has happened before. In whatever case, if they find that the problem is hardware related, they would replace the entire logic board because that has the graphics card soldered to it and that's where the problem would lie.
If the problem comes up after you go back to college, they do offer a mail in repair program which is very convenient. They mail you a box with next day shipping, you send it to them, they fix it, and they send it back with next day shipping. I've used it a few times since I also live far from an Apple store and I always get it back after 3-4 days.
Also, anytime the glitch happens, take video. If you have to take it to the Apple store, having video evidence of the problem will be very helpful because there's no guarantee you'll be able to reproduce the problem at the store.
