Discussion: Pop Girls that proved you wrong

It's been 7 years since good ol' 2008, a year where most of today's pop divas finally had their BIG break into superstardom with hit singles like "Just Dance", "Umbrella" and "I Kissed A Girl" and career-defining albums like Fearless and Breakout.

A lot of detractors said many of them wouldn't last too long and would remain one-era wonders. What were your thoughts about the pop girls back then? Did any of them prove you wrong? Did you expect some of these girls to evolve and become this huge?. Or did any of them fell short to your predictions / expectations?.

Feel free to discuss about the veterans if you want to (considering that the vision of the general public regarding stars like Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and P!nk has changed A LOT over the years).

Well I was a Gaga hater in all those years to be honest. I'd be your typical youtube poster
"she has no talent"
"she can't sing"
"why does she dress weird"
"So she's a man?"

So yeah in that aspect she exceded my expectations cause if you'd tell me 1.5 years ago I was gonna be a fan of Gaga I'd tell you to **** off and laugh.

I think Rihanna did. I used to confuse her with Ciara back in 2005-2006 actually, and I thought she was talentless and that her career wouldn't last.

Gaga kinda proved me wrong too. I liked her since the first time I heard Just Dance but I never though she would be that big since EDM wasn't mainstream in 2008. I though she was going to be big in Europe like Kylie Minogue and that's it.

Personally, I did NOT see the Taylor / Katy slayage coming

. Like, this SCREAMS one-hit wonder.

I thought Taylor would remain country and local forever and I still remember how Katy was considered a reductive Lilly Allen wannabe

. I thought GaGa would be permanently unstoppable and that Rihanna would become a classy r&b singer (the Good Girl Gone Bad album cover was really sophisticated, so I had no idea

). I just knew Miley was destined to do great things when "7 Things" smashed

. And Ariana took me for surprise - even Demi had more chances / promo than her. Poor Victoria Justice.

Just Dance is dance-pop. She did EDM for the first time with Artpop (or maybe Born This Way but definitely not with TF/TFM).

Gaga proved me wrong because I never thought people would ever be able to put the theatrics aside and focus on her voice. I always believed that people would care about her outfits and videos more than her as a performer forever because of the impact they made. Now seven years later, she is one of the most acclaimed artists in the industry with one of the biggest and best voices, and even though some people don't like her they can't deny this!

I thought Miley Cyrus was over post-Can't Be Tamed tbh so I was kinda surprised when she came back with We Can't Stop and killed the game. Also, although I liked Katy during the OotB era, I didn't see her becoming some superstar, I just forgot about her until CG came out and I was pretty much obsessed from there.

I used to hate Gaga during The Fame, yet here I am, stanning for her.
I didn't think Taylor Swift would become that big.
I didn't think Miley would become the Miley we know.
I didn't think Ariana would make it (I liked her first album, I just didn't think she would go anywhere).

No me neither but in all honesty when she put out IKAG and H&C and was doing that song with 3OH!3 I'd thought she'd stay more in that genre. I actually liked her back then but I dunno it just went flacid and I lost interest.

Ariana Grande - In this day and age, people from Disney and Nick don't usually go on to be as successful as she is. I didn't think she would have a successful singing career.

Katy Perry - I thought she would be a one-hit wonder.

Rihanna - I thought she would fall off like Ashanti did.

Katy Perry - When I saw that "I Kissed a Girl" performance on the Grammys, I said she was going to be a one hit wonder and now I stan.

Ariana Grande - I get she had semi-success during the Yours Truly era but when "Problem" came a big hit I never expected so many top hits from My Everything . I thought "Break Free" was gonna flop because its basic EDM but nope etc.

Lady Gaga - I thought she was gonna be a one hit wonder with "Just Dance" and was too weird for the general public. Well I was wrong

Rihanna - The first song I heard by her was "Umbrella" and I was not aware of her previous success. I predicted she would become big and saw star quality in her.

Miley Cyrus - I remember thinking "aawww Hannah Montana has a hit single. Cute." I thought that would be it for her to be honest. The first time I heard "We Can't Stop" I thought "this is only gonna be a top 50 hit at best." I remember when he video came out and me and my mom thought she's done for and she would have barely any success. Turns out the Bangers era was pretty big.

Gaga should be respected just because of her exceptional music talents and her music education history

The first time I ever heard about Lady GaGa (some clips of "Just Dance" on TV) I literally thought she was a DJ

I certainly didn't expect GaGa to be acclaimed / a Grammy winner but I knew she was here to stay when "Poker Face" was released (she was SO cool

). And then the "Paparazzi" music video and boom - Queen of the 00s

- I knew Ke$ha wouldn't last. "Tik Tok" was cute, massive, etc. but not gonna lie, I was very surprised when I found out she had an actual fanbase (thanks to ATRL).

- The GP was really rooting for Britney. It's weird how they collectively stopped paying attention to her after the Circus comeback.

- It's weird how Beyoncé wasn't really a deity back then. And I still can't recall the exact moment where this 'Queen B!' movement started. Probably the Super Bowl.

- I was scared Miley would become Lindsay 2.0 (I know she's wild but I'm talking about going completely out of control). But she matured a lot thanks to Liam Hemsworth.

- He's not a pop girl but Justin Bieber was SO close to take over the industry completely and become the Prince Of Pop, officially. His POWER was insane.

- I thought Fergie / The Black Eyed Peas would last longer
