'Game of Thrones' gets record ratings: Biggest since 'Sopranos' finale

The fourth-season premiere of the fantasy delivered the show’s biggest audience yet: 6.6 million viewers. That makes Sunday’s Thrones HBO’s most-watched program since The Sopranos’ series finale in 2007.

Season 3 opened to 4.4 million viewers and eventually peaked at 5.5 million for the sixth episode.

Last season Thrones averaged 14.4 million viewers per episode, second only to The Sopranos as HBO’s most-watched series. This year, Thrones might overtake the classic mob drama to claim the premium cable network’s all-time crown.

HBO Go, the pay cabler’s streaming service, crashed during the premiere with many receiving a “fatal error” message, attributed to “overwhelming demand.”

Watch it from the beginning! You'd get so confused, it isn't plot driven at all! It's all motivation and dialogue driven.

Massive for HBO. You can't compare HBO's numbers to network shows, nor more widely available cable dramas like The Walking Dead. You have to keep in mind that HBO is a paid subscription.

Even season 3's open w/ 4.4 was huge. This is just absolute destruction.
