No one is "hiding" behind straight people. The only way to earn equal rights for the LGBT community is by convincing the public, and in turn the courts, that same-sex relationships are okay and something that should be advocated for. You're making it sound like there aren't thousands of gay people fighting and lobbying for LGBT rights every single day through organizations such as the HRC or GLAAD.
And there are parallels between the LGBT Rights Movement and Black Civil Rights Movement of the 60's, but they are mostly superficial. Black people were able to unite and successfully fight for equality due to a shared culture, history, and ancestry. The gay community is much more diverse, spanning across every racial, religious, social, economic, and political spectrum, making it much harder to form a united front and appoint a single "leader".
