I understand that pop and rap are more successful than rock these days, but why has rock declined so much in the western world and is rarely discussed on boards like this?
Is it because pop music consists of individual pop stars and image instead of a band of four or five, is it because rock artists don't do anything interesting, or is it because pop and rap stars are more likely to sell out to the mainstream?
it doesn't get discussed on here because this is a POP forum. I mean, there are people who stan and are fans of rock artists, but a majority of the members on stan for a pop artist.
"Rock" is a very broad term. I also wouldn't say pop and rap are more successful, as some of the most critically acclaimed music of the past decade have been from indie bands. You're on a Top 40-centric board, so pop/electronic/dance music is the most ubiquitous among these users' tastes.
If you see a "decline," it's only because of where you're looking.
It's because rock is a huge genre. There won't be a rock community but an alt, indie, metal and so on. While pop while large too is still very tied together. And this is a pop forum.
As atrlster said, the rock community is "splintered". Especially in the past decade or so, thanks to the Internet, there's been a lot of musical fragmentation. It means everybody can more easily discover their own music, and in the rock world, it's meant there's been fragmentation, and there's no longer one particular sub-genre or band that's popular enough to compete with the mainstream.
Also, what other posters have said, this is a pop forum, so pop music will primarily be discussed here. And rap, dance, hip hop, R&B, electronica, etc. have many ties to the pop world these days that rock music simply just doesn't have.
Well Indie rock is pretty popular on here but that's about it. Plus there really aren't any good real rock bands out anymore to even talk about. I believe that Rock finally died in around 2005-2007.
1- You're on a top 40 forum
2- You're on a top 40 forum full of geighs. Geighs aren't the biggest fans of rock.
I'm gay and I love tons of rock/punk/alt/goth artists. Jack Off Jill, Within Temptation, The Birthday Massacre, September Mourning, AFI, Amanda Palmer, Breaking Benjamin, MCR the list goes on.
