I wouldn't put Beyonce in the list though.
I think talented popstars aren't rare they just get no or hardly any exposure

As a rock fan... I think you're kind of right about this. That isn't to say that there's no good rock music today; hell, at the Grammys we saw two AWESOME rock performances by the Black Keys and Jack White; but we haven't seen any real shifts in the genre since the 90s. I hope I get to see a Nirvana- caliber act turn the genre on its ear before I bite the dust.
