TD was the most promoted era that I can think of. The airplay was bigger than any artist has seen for an album this decade. The promo was never-ending. Years went by and she got married and divorced and kept promoting, discounting, remixing and accoustic-ing. As the years went by she double-booked on all the major shows like AMAs, SNL and the Grammys. From E! Specials to kids shows like Barneys and The Simpsons there was no end to it. Just when you thought it was over another big promo round came for the rerelease, and when you thought that was over yet another huge promo round came for the movie (accompanied by a mass discount, of course) with brands like Pepsi giving her global promo.
At the very least the era should have sold 10M, but probably more like 15M.
After this tremendous 3-year-long investment in Katy Perry and her brand, why were her album sales on par with a good but rushed Rihanna era like LOUD or a subpar Gaga era like BTW?
People didn't think she was worth the $10, just like they didn't buy a $10 ticket to see her movie, they probably just spent $5 (or less) on the singles
Good question! You'd think with all those singles and performances and movie she would be well past 10m but she is still behind in sales compared with albums like LOUD and Born This Way.
This is just the way it is. She is a singles artist.
She's more of a singles artist...her whole image/persona doesn't scream BUY MY ALBUM.
You could say that of artists like Ke$ha or Flo Rida who release radio candy but whose labels don't really push them or invest in them. But Capitol pushed Katy like she was the legend to end all legends, a mega album selling artist of the millennium.
Any post-06 pop artist will struggle to sell 10 million copies of one single album, and/or WILL never sell 10 million of one album altogether no matter how promoted. Not even Taylor has sold 10 million copies of one of her albums WW iirc, and she has the country fanbase as well.
Because you sell albums if people are interested in your works and your persona.
The GP is only here for her songs (if they're catchy and fun tho) and don't want to invest more money on her (tours, albums and tickets for the movie)
