Jennifer Lawrence wins award that often leads to Oscar glory
Quote:
Jennifer Lawrence is an overwhelming favourite to win an Oscar for her role in 'Silver Linings Playbook', and the star looks to have further cleared her path to an Academy Award after being chosen as Outstanding Performer of the Year by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The Award is a reliable indicator of Oscar glory, with previous recipients including Colin Firth, Penelope Cruz, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron, all on the way to glory on Oscars night.
Kate Winslet, Heath Ledger, James Franco and Viola Davis (last year's winner) have also won the award before gaining nominations, if not the ultimate prize.
Festival director Roger Durling announced that the 22-year-old 'Hunger Games' actress would win the award yesterday, with the star receiveing the award on February 2.
The only time that an actor or actress has failed to go from Santa Barbara Outstanding Performer to the Oscar Best Actor or Actress shortlist was Angelina Jolie in 2007, missing out for 'A Mighty Heart'.
However it may well be that her role in 'The Hunger Games' cemented her status rather than 'Silver Linings', as she has a number of competitors for the Oscar nod, with Jessica Chastain ('Zero-Dark-Thirty'), Sally Field ('Lincoln'), Quvenzhane Wallis ('Beasts of the Southern Wild') and Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) snapping at her heels.
Of those only Hathaway has had a comparable achievement in anchoring a blockbuster franchise with 'The Dark Knight Rises' as well as earning critical awards appreciation.
According to Hitfix, said: “Ms. Lawrence impressed us earlier this year in 'The Hunger Games', but has now left us moonstruck with her career-defining performance in 'Silver Lining Playbook' – recalling classic turns by [Carole] Lombard, [Barbara] Stanwyck and [Claudette] Colbert. Naming her our Outstanding Performer of the Year is an understatement.”
Will Jen keep her awards run going come Oscar night? If you believe the bookies then yes.
