Personally I think that we have seen several high profile artists die in the last 5 years or so (MJ, Whitney, Amy being the most notable), and many of them see a miraculous resurrection of their reputation posthumously. Where once they were considered has-beens or jokes to the general public, after death they attain, or re-attain, iconic status.

However what do you think on this burning issue?

Some become, some don't.
MJ didn't become overrated once he died, the praise he got is perfectly understandable.
He's the greatest performer of all time, after all.

Not to me but when someone dies some people tend to love the music they disliked when the artist was alive

I hate when an artist isn't appreciated before death. And then they die and people love them, the same people who talked **** about them.

With MJ, I agree with you. That's what the 3rd poll option is about really - because in his later years he was incredibly disrespected by the media and considered a kind of freak show.

His new album would not sell much more cause of it and his metascore of 38 would not go up that much, too.

To answer the question....... sometimes? It's much easier to look past/forget an artists troubled history after they die and appreciate them for their influence. It's the way it is though.

Before Michael, Whitney, and Amy died they were the butt of jokes. Once they died, people were reminded that underneath their respective issues, these were talented musicians!

I wouldn't say they become overrated, I just think people get side tracked by the personal lives of celebrities - they forgot why these people were who they were. Unfortunately, people only realize this when it's too late.

I remember Amy having a 4/5 on AllMusic for B2B, but after she died it rose to 5/5.

Like, sure, MJ and Whitney were bashed in their last few years of life, but it doesnt change the fact that they were still respected in the music industry and by their peers and still had supporting fans.
