They don't become overrated per say, but they become more exposed to the public. More people start to become interested in their music and what they did in their career. It's sad but true.
The likes of MJ, Whitney, Amy aren't overrated. Just because people stopped cracking jokes about their personal lives after they passed away (out of respect for the dead) doesn't mean people SUDDENLY realized how amazing they are after they passed away.

Yea even though Whitney and MJ were the butt of jokes it didn't take away the fact that they could still walk into a room and demand a standing ovation without doing anything but stepping to the podium/mic.
I think when any artist dies, more people become interested, or want to re-visit the artist's work for w/e reason.
Aaliyah was praised A LOT before her death. I guess the fact that she was young and was on the tip of becoming a MEGA-superstar made people a little more sympathetic or feel more for her death.

Exactly. Aaliyah already had co-signs from janet, stevie wonder, isley brothers, Patti Labelle and whitney houston to boot while ALIVE. With platinum albums and a blossoming movie career. Her most critically acclaimed album came out while ALIVE and her biggest hit. How is she overrated? Same idiots just babbling nonsense.
Aaliyah's posthumous collection "I Care 4 U" (Blackground/Universal) enters The Billboard 200 at No. 3 on sales of 280,000 units, giving the late R&B singer her second best debut on the chart. In July 2001, her self-titled album arrived at No. 2 on sales 187,000 copies and has gone on to sell 2.5 million. The new album -- which also debuts on top of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart -- was led by the first single "I Miss You," which last week reached No. 13 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.
Yes. and well-deserved. ( although babygirl was celebrated while LIVING. )
And while Aaliyah was alive, were people saying "Aaliyah is about to take over the game", or anything of the like?
I don't see your point in bringing up my fave(s), because I highly doubt either one of them spoke on her while she was alive. If so, I'd like receipts for the purchase.

She was very well acclaimed before her death though.

Who knows what people were saying? When Aaliyah was alive, we didn't have the internet to discuss music artists like we do now. Do you actually think I can just pull up threads on atrl of people talking about Aaliyah from 1994-2001? Come on now.
And every Janet stan knows that She admired Aaliyah out of the "Janet" clones, even saying she wanted to work with her.
Jackson is really feelin' pop star/actress' style. Janet Jackson is the one the most popular stars in the world, but she is not above giving a big shout out to others. Such is the case with singer/actress Aaliyah. We hear Janet is a huge fan.
"I've loved her from the beginning because she always comes out and does something differently, musically." Wow, Miss Jackson was almost tripping over herself endorsing Miss Aaliyah. You would think they've known one another for years, but that's not the case.
"And I love the fact that she dances more in her videos and things. We're starting to get to know each other. Whether we'll work together or not. I don't know. It would be fun to do something with her."
To answer the question....... sometimes? It's much easier to look past/forget an artists troubled history after they die and appreciate them for their influence. It's the way it is though.

Even though you provided no legitimate source, I'll give you Janet. Okay, now Stevie.....
Also, please show me receipts of people saying Aaliyah was about to "take over the industry" prior to her death. Because it appears today that Aaliyah fans like to overrate her impact and influence because she had an untimely death. So I'd like you to show me the same things being said about her prior to her death.

Lol @ not legit. I knew you would make some type of excuse.
I'll get the stevie quote.
And did you read what I said in the last post? Aaliyah was alive during an era where the internet was NOT as prominent as it is today. I can't pull up quotes from what the overall public said about her from 1994-2001, as it's ****ing impossible. . You can't compare praise now (that you can easily access to because of the internet) to praise that you never saw due to lack of resource.
