Since Star Wars was just released to Blu-Ray last Friday and I finally got it in the mail today (which I'm super uper duper pumped, just previewed it and the picture looks breathtaking and the sound blew my 5.1 surround system to pieces. The DVD's look like ****, so I may now just throw them away )

On a side note, when do you think Blu-Rays will officially take over and kill DVD's ? I say another year or two and DVD's will be non-existent anymore

I'm so pumped now to watch all the Star Wars on Blu. The day has come. I haven't seen the last 3 episodes either so those will be new to me

Are they really that much better than DVDs?

Like 2 or 3. I only buy them if the special features are good, otherwise, I just stick to DVD's because they're cheaper.

I think maybe like 3-4. I don't see the point in amassing a vast Blu-Ray collection with so many cheap rental options these days, especially when the format will become outdated at some point.

That's false. I've bought at least 100 Blu-Rays less than the $15 mark. Plus if you wait, they become cheap. When Final Destination 5 was release in theaters, if I recall, the others went on sale for around $12 a piece. Plus Spy Kids 1 - 3 on Blu-Ray was that cheap with Spy Kids 4-D being released.

Not only that but I was browsing on Best Buy and noticed Narnia 3 was $19 on Blu-Ray and $23 on DVD. Not sure if that was a mix-up but why was the Blu-Ray less than the DVD?

I also went to Target a while back looked at the new releases and a Blu-Ray was on sale for a measely $2 more. I was like really? People can't afford 2 more dollars?

I own 375 Blu-Rays and take it from me, I'm an expert. DVD's are ONLY worth buying if it's less than $10. Hell less than $5. I wouldn't spend anymore than $5 on it. Unless it's a movie not on Blu-Ray and won't ever be on Blu-Ray.

You guys really need to know what you speak of before you act like you know. I am always at Best Buy / Target / Wal-Mart looking for good Blu-Ray deals and I laugh at people who buy DVD's. WASTE OF MONEY. DVD's are the devil.

If you wait and actually look around for good deals, you can buy a Blu-Ray for cheaper than a DVD. i.e. Black Swan is on sale for $13 on Blu-Ray right now (at Amazon.com) while it's retail price is $29.99. So I just ordered it online

If you like washed out, dull boring blurry picture, YES. Which I mean referring to DVD's. DVD's are compressed on a disc so it loses lots of information i.e. quality.

A Blu-Ray has more capacity and can hold more information and it makes a movie look like it was meant to be filmed. The colors are richer, more clarity, non-dull, non-blurry.

Plus the sound is louder and less muffled to a DVD.

For example, Avatar. Yes Avatar. If you watch the DVD, it's 100 times WORSE than what you saw in theater. I threw it in and LAUGHED at it. The rainforest scene with all the colors looked horrible. I popped in the Blu-Ray and basically your reaction is..."Wowwww look at the picture."

Honestly I don't know why they made Avatar on DVD. It wasn't meant to be watched in standard definition. I bet that would've increased Blu-Ray sales if it was only available to Blu-Ray.

Your previous point is one I agree with (and followed for quite some time until I found myself randomly buying more and more Blu-Ray discs recently). But the other point? ALL formats become outdated. We all knew that the DVD would eventually be replaced by a superior format, but we all buy and have bought a lot of DVDs to own, right? By that logic, no one should have bought a DVD because it was doomed to be outdated at some point.

As for me, I have about 20 right now, with eight coming in at various times over the next couple of months. And I'm contemplating buying more.

Yeah? I know that already. Disney movies are always the most expensive because they are the best. That's why I'm waiting.

Cars (on Blu-Ray) is $20 right now at Wal-Mart and knowing Disney that is probably the cheapest it's going to get, vs. the $34. But I'm waiting for Cars 2 to be released on Blu-Ray because I'm sure Cars will drop lower than $20 in promotion of the second film.

I don't have Cars on Blu-Ray because of that. If you wait, the deals come. That's why I'm avoiding Disney releases right now.

I know this is on a computer and on Youtube, but if you watch this, you can get a pretty good idea of a DVD vs. Blu-Ray image side-by-side comparison, only it's with a video game, but it's the same thing. Go to 1:10 in this video. DVDish picture to the left. Blu-Ray picture to the right. There is a HUGE difference and I'm sure on your HDTV you will be able to see it more clearly. But this is a good example I can find...



*At 1:10, you can notice a HUGE difference in quality. It's from the first Playstation 2 console, now to the PS3 console in HD. It's exactly like a Blu-Ray. The left side is all dull and washed out, boring. The right side is more colorful and more richer in detail and makes a big difference in quality. Which game (or movie) would you rather be watching?

Yeah. There are people out there who could care less if they watch a crappy VHS picture to a Blu-Ray picture. It's not even about the money, it's just "they don't care," about those aspects. I personally do.

I can't stand watching a VHS quality movie. It ruins the movie for me. Watching (or playing) something in Hi-Def makes it a much better experience for me.

Though I'll be reminded to laugh at your ass when I see you buy a DVD while I'm purchasing a new Blu-Ray

I hate DVD's with a passion. I really do. I think watching a crappy presentation just ruins it. Like if you were to watch a DVD and the picture kept going out and you kept seeing those "lines" on it (like on TV) because there is a bad signal, it's the same exact thing for me. It's annoying and gets in the way of a good movie. But you do what you have to do

I like to convert people from DVD to Blu-Ray. I showed my Mom "How To Train Your Dragon" from DVD then to Blu-Ray and she was like WOW NOW I KNOW WHY YOU BUY THOSE BLU-RAYS IT WAS A BREATHTAKING PICTURE. THE DVD SUCKS.
