Image can be their personal lives, their outfits/looks or how hot they are. It can be that they gained fame due to a rumoured male anatomy or that they sell tons of albums because people felt sorry for them.

Gaga, of course.

Ke$ha moreso than GaGa. GaGa can change her image without having to worry much. She expresses herself however she wants. Ke$ha seems afraid to take it to the next level because she's been having so much success with her party anthems, while gems like "Hungover" remain on the album where most people don't hear them.

Her Radio Airplay says otherwise.

Cant the same be said for gaga though? She has yet to release a ballad (even though her label tried to release speechless) or even a slightly less commercial song (dance in the dark)

Lady Gaga, altho I think if she became "normal" now she wouldn't have problems selling, but it def helped her getting all this hype and attention + success

On the contrary most of the media frenzy that surrounds her is based off her off the wall oddity, and on stage antics and theatrics. Take that all away and you end up getting a basic blond girl who can sing and play instruments which isn't nearly as shocking, and as "innovating" as she is often claimed to be. Take away her kicker and you take away the very thing that makes her different from everyone else.

She may do "well" but she wouldn't be curb-siding the other girls success wise if she took off all the gloss. Her pretension would have no basis, or value.

She wouldn't be a ground-breaking artist without the crazy outfits/videos/performances.
And her best music (singles atleast) came from The Fame so IMO her music has been going downhill (it is still great pop music but she started following her own formula which was a breath of fresh air when she debuted and BTW just wasn't what it was expected to be)
she would be kinda boring without the image she has made of herself and without it all and without a character to play she would not be the pop force she is today.

The same can be said for GaGa's singles, to a certain extent, but the lyrical content isn't quite as limited as Ke$ha's singles have been. I love Ke$ha, so don't get me wrong, but GaGa has taken a lot of risks. "Born This Way" may have a very commercial sound, but its lyrical content is far from being safe. It's a song that explicitly says "It's ok to be Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered," and that's not what the conservative public wants to hear. But the liberal public appreciates it for how bold it is. Ke$ha could do the same, making it seem genuine is the problem, because people are learning to not take Ke$ha so seriously (which is part of her charm, she's a fun artist).
