Let me start by saying that I love Mariah Carey. Her songs are amazing and she is one of the nicest celebrities I know. She's probably and will always be the most successful female singer in the United States.

But Mariah has never had much of an influence. I saw some people voting for her in the Queen of Pop poll and I go like Mariah's a great vocalist but she has done nothing groundbreaking, innovative or different. Her albums are bland - typical pop/R&B albums with really very little depth. She sings primarily about heartbreak, love and boys.

So what is it about Mariah Carey that makes her the Queen of Pop? Her #1s? Really? #1s? Even you know you're desperate if you bring up her success because charts and numbers don't make the queen - impact, influence, longevity and critical acclaim make the queen.

Oh, and yes, I've listened to most of her songs. Butterfly was amazing but did it break any new ground?

Well, her songs don't really add anything groundbreaking, but its not like you have to. She has incredible commerical acclaim.

Butterfly has stood the test of time and is still fresh to this day...but I think a lot of her fans like her because of her personality..there is NO ONE like Mariah and all her over-top craziness ...that's why I loved her when I was only 7 when the Honey video dropped...She was this girl with amazing voice, and easily was a sex symbol without even trying...there's always been SOMETHING about her, and I think that's why people have been interested in her for so long.

Many of you misunderstood my question: why is Mariah Carey considered by some to be the Queen of Pop?

Mariah is not the queen of pop as she's more r&b crossover imo.

She is one of the greatest vocalists of all time and is recognized as such. Whitney, Mariah, Celine... three legendary women who perfected the art of the glory note. Mariah's influence on the art of singing as a whole is immeasurable. So yes, she has done enough to be called the queen.

Scream at the top of her lungs...thus inspiring artist such as Xtina. Legend.

In addition to what Kworb stated, you can't turn to a blind eye to her worldwide success. For one to be called Queen, one would have to sell an extraordinary amount of records which Mariah has done. So although I don't think she's the Queen, I do think the term shouldn't be such a surprise.

Well I think I've shaded Gaga too much recently.

Doesn't matter if people don't remember it, it influenced so many artists of today.
