People are allowed to be sad if someone who has made them happy and provided them with entertainment or inspiration dies. You're not required to be equally sad for every celebrity death, but you've gotta be aware that each one is going to have their own fanbase to whom this is tragic news.
Syria gets plenty of coverage. It's kinda hard to make and broadcast a personalised profile for every victim of a war though.

There actually was a massive spike in the first few months of this year compared to previous years in the number of famous people dying. The second half of the year has been a bit quieter though.
It would sound childish if people actually thought the year was responsible, but they don't, they're merely pointing out that famous deaths have been quite prominent this year. Unfortunately it's only going to get worse from here on out - it has been 50 years since the entertainment business took off, there will be a lot more death than we're used to coming. 80s coke habit hangovers will be visiting a lot of people pretty soon
