1000's of people die in Syria or other war torn countries and it barely makes news, and then a celebrity, who more often than not has been abusing drugs for years, dies and it's headline news for days on end, and we're told how sad it is.

People are allowed to be sad if someone who has made them happy and provided them with entertainment or inspiration dies. You're not required to be equally sad for every celebrity death, but you've gotta be aware that each one is going to have their own fanbase to whom this is tragic news.


Syria gets plenty of coverage. It's kinda hard to make and broadcast a personalised profile for every victim of a war though.


There actually was a massive spike in the first few months of this year compared to previous years in the number of famous people dying. The second half of the year has been a bit quieter though.

It would sound childish if people actually thought the year was responsible, but they don't, they're merely pointing out that famous deaths have been quite prominent this year. Unfortunately it's only going to get worse from here on out - it has been 50 years since the entertainment business took off, there will be a lot more death than we're used to coming. 80s coke habit hangovers will be visiting a lot of people pretty soon

People know celebrities and have seen them grow for decades (like MJ). His music, life, and legacy was known by 4 different generations. Of course people like that will get attention.

Not inherently but I'm seeing a trend in people going through the motions of mourning celebrities they knew next to nothing about & it's hella nauseating. Sharing empty & vapid angst on social media because you fear your own death is the antithesis of what actual mourning should be about, which is celebrating that person's life. Young people can be so narcissistic

The only thing that bugs me when celebrities die, especially when they are musicians, is that people pay attention to them ONLY after they die. After Amy Winehouse died, everyone was talking about how good she is, I saw music stores with piles of her CDs/DVDs, but before that, people only remembered Amy for her substance issues. It seems like people can't get the best of musicians and artists when these are still alive.

Yes, they are. But it's just another example of american celebrity obsession.

Weeks before she died she was a laughing stock and then her death redeemed her of all her past, it's sad...

Of course it's going to be news. If millions of people know someone, it's going to be announced. I myself don't get too affected if I don't know the celebrity, but if I know them & their work was a part of my childhood or been an influence on me of course it would have an impact, hence why others would also feel the same- it just happened to be tons of people. You don't overhype death!
