People tend to care only about someone they know so a famous person dying gets more attention than thousands of "nobodies" dying. Plus people say they don't care about Syria (and Middle East) because it happens there everyday

People who complain and say ''Celebrities dying is nothing, millions die!'' are just making fools out of themselves, many people who mourn their idols are actually aware that many other people die on worst circunstances and they (at least I do) do the best to help them, by giving money, working with organizations... All these people do is complain and seat on their couches being miserable. When all is said and done a collective can't be mourned the same way an individual is.

Any death is very sad of course, but it's also kind of out of touch to be losing your mind over a celebrity dying due to a health issue.....

This. Everyone knows that death is sad, regardless of who it is, but so many people die every day that it's not like every single death can be covered on the news all the time. For someone like Carrie Fisher, they were a well-known celebrity who, additionally, was part of what is arguably the biggest film franchise of all-time. For me, personally, it felt like a personal loss because she and Princess Leia were a huge part of my childhood and my life in general. I was a massive fan of hers and I was really devastated by her loss. Someone like Carrie was known by pretty much everyone, and that's what makes the difference.

People who say things like this only prove two things: they're passing themselves off as disingenuous and self-serving.

It comes down to this: the human psyche was never designed to care about abstract concepts like numbers. You can say that thousands die every day but it doesn't paint a face to any of them. It doesn't tell people WHY they should care. Humans care more for the people they know, trust and like. Not faceless strangers they'll never meet. Should we teach people to recognize there are numerous people suffering and dying? Absolutely but it's just downright pessimistic to say so when a celebrity dies. And in most cases, hypocritical since those who say things like that generally don't even care about the people who died either (they're just seeking attention or to appear enlightened). They're human, after all and it's only natural that their fans are devastated.

Especially those like Carrie and Michael Jackson, both of whom played central and pivoting roles in almost everyone's childhoods. Naturally people are going to be upset.
