For all intents and purposes, Taiwan is an independent sovereign country. China practically has no control over it. Taiwan has its own executive government, legislature, judiciary, military, passport, currency, and foreign policy that to some extent isn't constrained by China. It also trades fairly freely with most countries in the world so it is essentially a country in everything but name. Taiwan and China also have a growing economic relations with each other. The current status quo works well for both countries. Changing it would only likely result to war and gain virtually no practical benefits in the end.
