So when I graduate I want to go out of state and get the hell out but my family's adamantly against it (even though I already have a few schools in mind). If any of y'all ATRLers went out of state, how did you do it?

I just did it tbh and told my family they had to deal with it. It's hard but the sense of freedom you get is worth it

I stayed put for my university, if I was to go interstate it would be to Melbourne

Not really equivalent as I'm not American but I'm from London and I moved to Essex for uni (Essex is a county/ I moved to a different town, 1 hour 30 mins away from London) and I don't regret my choice. It's bought a whole new experience and perspective and I really enjoy it. Go for it

Unless your family is very well-off why would you do that? Tuition is twice the price at public schools, it can be up to 30k a year

I didn't leave my state (here in Canada, province) for school since I have a great school already close by. I have plenty of friends who are out of province though and enjoy it for different reasons. You just need to plan yourself out financially and be pretty stringent about your spending so you'll need to adult a little bit. Think it through, make sure you can afford it, and take out government loans, take a job, or whatever you can.

My advice is to ask yourself why you want to leave for school. Is the school you have in mind better for your future wants than one that is closer by? More freedom to do what you want if you're away from family? Better opportunities for the future? Whatever it is, just make sure you tailor it to what you want. I think you'll grow more and complete as an individual if you move away and get more diverse experiences for sure but at the expense of other things like a lot less time with family and less money at your disposal.

I currently go out of state (and I'm from the Dakotas LOL) and it's a lot of money but you should look into scholarships.

Im from Chicago and go to college in Missouri. It's great living away from home and making a life of your own. I do miss city life so much but I do love the small college-town feel. It's ultimately up to you, but make sure you go to a good college or university for your major.

I guess I should mention that I stayed the summer in Missouri after my freshmen year to save money and get in-state tuition. I used to pay 10-12k/semester now I pay 3-4k. Look into it!

Yes get out of Iowa or whatever corn state you live in

I live in a university town and I chose to stay home and it was the worst decision I ever made. I wish I could go back in time and change it. I'm not saying you have to leave your current state but get away from home/your family. Living on your own but still being in an environment with a lot of other people will help you immensely in the very near future when you'll actually be 100% on your own. Plus you'll gain so many new experiences that weren't possible if you stayed home + you don't want to get stuck where you currently live for the rest of your life (unless you do in which case never mind).

Of course, money comes into play so if its not financially possible then that's another issue. But if that isn't an issue then definitely go for it!
