Discussion: Racism: how far has America really progressed?

Like, 4 years ago when Obama was elected I was like "Ok, we're getting somewhere". Now, 3 weeks before his possible re-election, I don't really think so as much. Has it? I know we've come a long way since Slavery and Jim Crow laws, but is racism really starting to seize or is it that minorities are coming such a big farce in America that they have a "bigger voice"?

Has America really progressed that much racially?

Sadly, racism will always exist. There will always be ignorant, bigoted people in America (and other countries) no matter how hard we try to educate them. Now that it's socially unacceptable to be racist, people have learned to hide it better.

America hasn't come that far... Obama got through but he is the exception to the rule. You don't have to look any further than the Education system in inner cities and the state of our prison system to see that racism is alive and well. What can we say about a country that was built on mass genocide and slavery. How far can we really go?

I think people are being WAY too pessimistic. Of course racism still exists and will always exists but alot has changed from the past. As time goes on people will become more accepting. Things like this doesn't change in a day it changes through generations,

The fact that blacks still need a channel such as BET to see people of their color on TV is already an indication as to how far we've progressed.

It hasn't progressed at all, I still get called the n word at school everyday and people write 'dirty ******' on my locker in sharpie too.

I don't think the way people perceive others will ever change really. I mean Obama got "angry" last night and people attacked him and said he couldnt get angry. It must be nice to be in a race where you can express all the emotions without being berated.
