I mean you see no Asian Americans almost anywhere in the media while there is a fair amount of African Americans on shows and media. I mean there are plenty of African American singers, celebrities and athletes while there isn't much of any Asian Americans being represented. Just a thought since for the most part it seems as if people only thinks African Americans are being neglected.

I've noticed this in this thread too.....there is a lot of racism in America, but not only against black people, also against Asians, "Brown people" (Middle Eastern, Indian, etc), people of native american descent, latinos. There are issues faced by many minorities.

• More colleges are offering courses in "Whiteness Studies" as white Americans cope with becoming what one commentator calls a "dispossessed majority group."
• A Texas group recently formed the "Former Majority Association for Equality" to offer college scholarships to needy white men. Colby Bohannan, the group's president, says white men don't have scholarship options available to minorities. "White males are definitely not a majority" anymore, he says.
• U.S. Census Bureau projections that whites will become a minority by 2050 are fueling fears that whiteness no longer represents the norm. This fear has been compounded by the recent recession, which hit whites hard.
You have this perception out there that whites are no longer in control or the majority.

• Conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh argued in a radio show that Republicans are an "oppressed minority" in need of a "civil rights movement" because its members willingly sit in the "back of the bus" and "are afraid of the fire hoses and the dogs."
• Fox talk-show host Glenn Beck led a march on Washington (attended primarily by white people) to "restore honor," and once called President Obama a racist with a "deep-seated hatred for white people and white culture." He later said he regretted making that comment.
• Conservative news outlets ran a number of stories last summer highlighting an incident from the 2008 elections, in which activists from the New Black Panther Party appeared to be intimidating voters at a polling place. Those claims were never proven.

It amazes me how some people are these days
Of course there are going to be scholarship opportunities exclusive towards minorities.I mean, minorities are more economically disadvantaged than their white counterparts.
Republicans aren't fooling anyone with that oppressed minority **** either,Maybe if their views weren't so damn extreme this go around, they would get more respect. From what I'm seeing,it's more conservative people out there being racist, sexist, homophobic to others.

Segregation was outlawed half a century ago. Obviously the racism issue wont go from night to day (no pun intended) in a short period of time.

Racism will always exist but I think it's fair to say America has progressed a lot. 50 years ago black people weren't even allowed to use the same facilities as white people and were 2nd class citizens. They now have equality in terms of the law and I think it's fair to say most people aren't racist. Saying this I've never been to America.

Racism describes patterns of discrimination that are institutionalized as “normal” throughout an entire culture. It’s based on an ideological belief that one “race” is somehow better than another “race”. It’s not one person discriminating at this point, but a whole population operating in a social structure that actually makes it difficult for a person not to discriminate.
Basically racism = institutional power + prejudice. Minorities can be prejudiced but white people hold the power in America due to the fact that the government, police force and all places of power are dominated by white people. White is considered the norm and standard race in America and negative stereotypes against minorities are ingrained into society, which often makes it difficult for white people to not discriminate. It means that the average person of colour has obstacles to overcome that don't apply for white people, hence white privilege.

I'd like to see the statistics for food preferences in the black community and the pollster who went around asking black people if they like watermelon and fried chicken.

America has completely progressed. Legally, black people are viewed equally as white people. And thats all that matters. Racism from citizens is all personal opinion and irrelevant.
|
Oh really now. So we just gonna act like trayvon martin and other black boys being killed by citizens is completely irrelevant. Or the fact the same police years back shot a black man 40 times for no reason. Or how sometime shaving an ethnic name can make you lose certain job positions. America has progressed but there is still big amounts of racism.

Wait. What about there being 80% more black people in prison for being caught being caught with drugs? Are you telling me that black people do more illegal drugs than white people?

There's been some progress, but to be honest America still and probably always will suffer from structural/institutional racism. Just because there was a Bill of Rights passed or because we elected the first Black president, hardly indicates America has gotten rid of racism. It's intact in other forms, one only needs to look at the criminal justice system (in which men of color are 7X more likely to be arrested or get harsher punishments), the educational system (in which funding for predominantly "white" schools is higher than that for low-income/minority schools), or even land-use policies (studies have shown time and time again that some of the most toxic waste sites and polluting companies sit in communities with the highest # of minority people). And let's not even get started in the obviously racist laws in Arizona and Alabama that really are targeted at Latinos, but masked as anti-immigrant laws.
