Backstreet Boys - Incomplete (22 weeks, peak: #3)
I pray for this heart to be unbroken
But without you all I'm going to be is incomplete
I've always liked the Backstreet Boys, and wasn't disappointed at all this year when they came back with a new album and a great new single, "Incomplete". Vocally they were always and still are the best boyband and even though they incorporated more rock into their songs (which seems to be a necessity in American music these days) they proved they're still on top of their game.
Ayumi Hamasaki - Fairyland (14 weeks, peak: #2)
The childhood memories are still in my heart
We never knew what would be waiting for us in our futures
If there was one person who released tons of great music in 2005, it's Ayumi Hamasaki. In the summer this Japanese entertainment mogul came out with "Fairyland", a great feel good summer song, with a pretty cool video that cost $2.4 million to make. Though the song burned out on me relatively fast, I was quite obsessed with it for a few weeks, and still enjoy listening to it once in a while.
Ayumi Hamasaki - Step You (15 weeks, peak: #2)
So 1, 2, 3, 4, one by one
1, 2, step you just like that
I want to know you well
Ayumi has her serious side, but also a silly side, usually best shown when she uses Engrish in her songs. Engrish is Asian English; they mean well but it just doesn't mean anything in actual English. "Step You" is a very catchy song and one of the biggest hits in Japan this year. When you hear it, there's not much you can do but hum along. Even if the song itself is pretty meaningless.
Ayumi Hamasaki - Is This Love? (30 weeks, peak: #2)
You were there as I had never seen you before
As I can only, only feel from far away,
how on earth can I express this emotion?
"Is This Love?" is a powerful rock ballad, borderline metal. It was released together with "Step You" as a double a-side, which undoubtedly makes it one of the best singles this year. The video is strange, like most of her videos, but very cool; she walks around her apartment and imagines everything near her explodes, yet never harms her. The gripping melody of the song and the emotion in her voice gave "Is This Love?" amazing longevity, and a deserved spot among the year's best releases.

Within Temptation - Memories (31 weeks, peak: #1(4))
All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments
Imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near
Your silent whispers, silent tears
Within Temptation is a Dutch band, and has been one of my favorites since "Ice Queen", which was a big hit for them in 2002. "Memories" is a beautiful ballad, and the best song from their third album, The Silent Force. Singer Sharon den Adel has angelic vocals that work really well with this song, especially in the verses. The song spent 4 weeks at #1 in February and stayed on the chart for quite a while.
Darren Hayes - Hero (32 weeks, peak: #1(1))
Ladies and gentlemen listen up please
I don't wanna be your hero
(No, I am not open, parts of me are broken)
Do yourself a favor, save yourself
Don't pick me, find someone else
(Why'd you wanna bother, find yourself another)
My #2 of 2004, this song made enough waves this year to reach the top 15 of 2005. I'm sure you all know by now what an amazing album Darren's The Tension And The Spark is, and how tragically it flopped. This album track is my favorite song of all time with male vocals, and everytime I hear it I just can't get over how good it is. It really deserved to be a single, but alas.
Ai Otsuka - Neko Ni Fuusen (20 weeks, peak: #1(1))
They look at me, and meow at me
"Are you stupid?" I ask, but they don't understand me
"How cute!" They ignorantly praise
"Neko Ni Fuusen" ("Balloon For A Cat") was Ai Otsuka's second single this year, a midtempo ballad in which she explains the world from the viewpoint of a cat. It was this song that really made me a fan of Ai, as I love weird songs and I love cats so this was just perfect. Her unique voice requires some getting used to, but once you start listening to her, it's hard to stop.
Darren Hayes - So Beautiful (16 weeks, peak: #2)
I have lost my illusions
I have drowned in your words
I have left my confusion to a cynical world
I am throwing myself at things I don't understand
Discover enlightenment holding your hand
"So Beautiful" came as a surprise; I thought we'd never hear from Darren again after his second album flopped. But no, he released this amazing song, to promote both the Savage Garden GH and his third solo album, out next year. It's just a great feel good song, with beautiful lyrics, and Darren singing it beautifully. I guess it's one of the few songs where the title is its description.

Tatu - Sacrifice (17 weeks, peak: #1(1))
You caress me, smoothly
Calm my fears and soothe me
Move your hands across me
Take my worries from me
An amazing song on one of the best albums of the year, "Sacrifice" drew me in quickly when I first heard it. The haunting music and vocals, Yulia's emotional screams, this song has everything that makes Tatu so damn good. I really think this could be a huge hit if it were ever released as a single.
Utada Hikaru - Be My Last (17 weeks, peak: #1(1))
Being unaccustomed to one another
We really did our best, didn't we?
We were part of a mistaken love
But it wasn't a mistake
I didn't particularly like this song at first, but the amazing video and the timeless melody eventually did suck me in. Though I'm still not sure what the song is about, the emotion in Utada's voice as she sings is enough to tell a story all on its own. She may be both Japanese and American, but I think her music blossoms the most when done in Japanese; as do her millions of Japanese fans.
Ai Otsuka - Smily (27 weeks, peak: #2)
Let's go look again for that lost feeling
Smile! Smile! I want to see you smile!
Let's try and whistle away those painful feelings
Smile! Smile! I can't wait to see you again
Every year there seems to be one of them, a senseless, extremely catchy song that's somehow really good. A few examples are "Blue (Da Ba Dee)", "Macarena", "Asereje" and "Dragostea Din Tei". I didn't expect that this year the song would come from Japan, but it did. "Smily" is a silly song, it's not really good music. But it's just so happy and cheerful, it puts a smile on my face whenever I hear it or see the video. Which is exactly what Ai wanted to accomplish, and another reason why she is such a great artist. "Smily" was the real summer smash for me this year and I will always remember the song fondly.
Ai Otsuka - Planetarium (18 weeks, peak: #1(5))
I want to go to where you are
I want to run right now and go to you
In the darkness, I won't be able to see
And though it's scary, I'll be fine
The countless stars are here with me now
As they always have been
I won't cry, because this was the beautiful sky
That I watched with you so long ago
While "Smily" is happy and cheerful, "Planetarium" is painfully beautiful. This ballad is about how you lose people you care about, yet the world around you (or in this case, the sky) remains the same. While Ai's voice is greatly suited for silly songs, songs such as these prove that she too can put emotion into her music, and really mean the things she sings. Combined with the fact that she writes and composes all of her material, I just have a great respect for her, and she's my favorite musical discovery of 2005.

Darren Hayes - Darkness (53 weeks, peak: #1(1))
Hibernating always waiting for something new
Happiness always ended
In the blink of an eye
There was no one attending
No one attending
Another Darren Hayes song that was on the 2004 year end chart, at #4 to be precise. It managed to stay on the chart during all of 2005, just because it's such an amazing, enchanting song. I don't think I'll ever get enough of it. The poetic lyrics, the unreal music, Darren's haunting voice, the whole thing is just perfection. He released it as a single, and it flopped; one of the greatest injustices in the history of music.
Ayumi Hamasaki - Heaven (18 weeks, peak: #1(3))
We sought for each other
Lost ourselves at times
And found each other at last
So whatever result may be waiting for us
It's nothing but destiny
This tragic ballad is another one of 2005's gems. Ayumi Hamasaki is one of the few people in the world who can convey agonizing emotion in such a realistic manner. With her brilliant voice, and her stunning lyrics, she takes the listener to her own world, and lets them experience the emotions through her music. This amazing song should definitely take over as #1 funeral song from such clichés as "Angels" and "Wind Beneath My Wings".
Utada Hikaru - Passion (6 weeks, peak: #1(6))
When I remember far, far back
The future was shining endlessly
Underneath the pretty blue sky
We slept endlessly
What can I say about this song? If it had been released earlier, it would've definitely been a #1 contender for the year. But since she got only six weeks in, it wasn't meant to be. But don't let my silly chart systems fool you. This song is one of the best ever made. It's like the regular Utada, made ten times better, and injected with a dose of Björk, new age, and plain musical genius. Just listening to it makes me forget about everything bad, and dream about everything good. In time, this could become my favorite song ever; it is THAT good. And of course we can't forget the breathtaking video, easily the best video of the year.

Tatu - All About Us (20 weeks, peak: #1(3))
They don't know, they can't see
Who we are
Fear is the enemy
Hold on tight, hold on to me
Cause tonight
It's all about us
This is Tatu's best song, barely edging out "All The Things She Said". Though the two songs are kinda similar, "All About Us" is a bit better in almost every way. The video is awesome, they both sound better than ever, and more importantly it's just an awesome pop song that you can listen to over and over without getting bored or annoyed.
Utada Hikaru - Exodus '04 (52 weeks, peak: #4)
Landscapes keep changing
History teaches something
I know I could be mistaken, but my heart has spoken
I cannot redirect my feelings
The waves have parted
Daddy don't be mad that I'm leaving
Please let me worry about me
Mama don't you worry about me
This is my story
This is a very strange song. The first few times I heard it I wasn't terribly impressed. But the song just sticks to you once you've heard it enough. There's something about the mesmerizing melody and instruments used in the song, that makes you want to listen to it over and over. Timbaland did an amazing job producing this track, it's probably the best thing he has done and will ever do in his career. "Exodus '04" stayed on the chart the entire year (though it mysteriously fell off for a week in February) and it's still positioned high, a year and a half after I first heard it.

Nightwish - Nemo (53 weeks, peak: #3)
Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart
Lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my everything
My #1 song of 2004, its amazing longevity puts it in the top 3 of 2005. Nightwish is my all time favorite band. They combined, metal, classical instruments and operatic vocals flawlessly, making the best music the world has ever known. When lead singer Tarja got fired a while ago, it was like a part of me died. But at least I can comfort myself with their legacy, which includes this fantastic song.
Ayumi Hamasaki - Moments (49 weeks, peak: #2)
If my life is fleeting like a flower
I'll be in full bloom by your side
And after watching your smile
I'll fall alone, quietly
If I could flutter like a bird
I would fly to you
And offer my wing
To your wounded back
If I could flow like the wind
I would reach you
If I could shine like the moon
I would keep shining on you
I'll be anything
If it can stop you from being seized with fear
I place this song in the same category as "Exodus '04". At first listen the song didn't seem anything special. It had a few weeks near the bottom of my chart before falling off. But months later, the song suddenly grabbed me. There is something about the melody that just clicks with me; I can hear it over and over and over and I just keep loving it. Only a genius could write music like this. "Moments" is Ayumi's best song, it's one of the best ballads of all time, and it's one of the few songs I will never get tired of hearing.
