For the first time in the modern era, young adults are more likely to live with their parents than with a spouse or partner, according to a new study by Pew Research Center.
The trend of young people staying in the nest longer is well known.
But the Pew report released Tuesday used census data to reveal how often 18-to-34-year-olds chose to room with mom and dad versus coupling up in their own households.
The year 2014, “appears to be a milestone,” according to the report, because dwelling with parents eclipsed residing with a romantic partner as the dominant living arrangement for young adults, for the first time since 1880.
share of young adults living with their parents hit 32.1% in 2014, passing the 31.6% who lived with a spouse or partner in a separate household. The rest lived alone, with roommates or other family members, or as single parents.
In 1960, meanwhile, a peak 62% of 18-34-year-olds lived as part of a romantic couple in their own households, while only 20% lived in their parents’ home, Pew said.
The share of young adults living with their parents has been edging up for years—going up between 1960 and 1990, dipping in the 1990s and then rising sharply in the new century, according to the report.
Pew researchers suggest several factors, including declining employment among young men in recent decades and lingering effects of the recession. But the researchers said that the chief reason is a “dramatic drop in the share of young Americans who are choosing to settle down romantically before age 35” either with a spouse or a partner.
Well with college a lot of 18-24 year olds live with there parents, some live at home because it's cheape, where back then you didn't have to go to college to have a successful career.
If you have a job or are a student, and help to pay the bills what's wrong with this? So many estranged young people from their parents after school/they leave. A family home >>> just like how it used to be in the past.
Maybe less couples are moving in together right away but it's folly to pretend income levels for fresh college graduates aren't low/stagnant but there's no shame in living with family
Some young adults graduate with $100,000 in debt because governments don't believe it's right to give education for free, it's not their fault that they need to bankrupt themselves to ensure they get an education that everyone deserves.
I wish I didn't have to live with my parents but I have no choice while completing college.
You should be glad sis. I didn't move out of my parents' home until I was 20 and as a result I don't nearly have as much debt as a lot of my classmates. Living at home during that extended period allowed me to establish myself financially.
