I don't know if this has been discussed before but here goes.

Can someone please explain why having a US #1 album is so important?

Why is it many people think a US #1 album is the be all and end all of all chart positions, regardless of healthy sales and #1 album positions in other parts of the world?

Apart from Rihanna (who isn't American and America not her main market) these artists who were/are considered mainstream have also not had US#1 studio Albums but have in other countries.

Boy George
Diana Ross
Jackson 5
Duran
Kylie Minogue
Shakira

Does the lack of a US #1 studio album somewhat diminish their status as WW pop icons? Is the US #1 album the golden grail of the pop industry and without it an artist's career is a flop?


What about those artist who land at the US #1 spot but barely go on to scan a million copies in the US and selling way less than those who don't have 'us #1 album' status. Are they more revered in US pop culture?

It's the first impression. A number 1 album is important because if it debut on top with strong sales it means it was really anticipated.


Why is a #1 single important?

Bragging rights for stanbases, P!NK sells great and so does Rihanna without any US #1.

Your stanbase bitches about all the threads about her yet continues to make them?

Some Rihanna's stans bragging non stop about her #1 singles in the US on the BB Hot100, but when it comes the the album Hot 200, having a US #1 album is completely irrelevant.

I personally don't think it's that important, great albums or songs that I love didn't went #1 (ie : The Fame/TFM, Bad Romance) and still managed to be extremely successful.

Nobody really cares that much.

But, for the last few months the navy has claimed their Queen of Pop while incessantly vomiting receipts and today Billboard spilled that scalding tea.

The US is everyone's main market. It's the market you have to be able to sell in, in order to be an international force. America is Rihanna's market when it comes to singles. Why does an #1 album matter? Well, because an artist's main goal is to have their complete body of work appreciated. Being able to get millions of people to fork over $10 for a full album is a Hell of a lot better than getting them to fork over $1 for a song.

When WFL went viral and went #1, the Navy was all about Rihanna being the next Madonna. Now that TTT's first week sales flopped, #1 albums don't mean anything. It's ridiculous and contradictory.
