This lovable little animation may not be a big contender for honors with the likes of Zootopia and Moana in the race, but, hey, it was cute. The little pug was underutilized and why did they give him the voice of a gross middle aged man? Pugs are cute old men not fat 40 year old ones. The plotline was cute and it included death so props to ya for teaching the kids early that Fido ain't gonna make it till college.
19. Ghostbusters
Half of me has this on the list because I enjoyed it, and half because I will never not live for the tears of sexists/racists/homophobes (and with a film starring a black woman and a lesbian, we got all three!). Luckily, this little buddy comedy romp is plenty good enough to actually justify its ranking. Ignoring all of the internet controversy over the idea of women in coveralls, things actually worked out. I had a bowl of nachos and some bomb ass cheese dip with a Fanta when I watched this in theaters. It was cute, although there was a little girl in the theater who spent a good half of the film screaming and yelling delight and it was only me and her and her grandma. Love that you have representation in the sciences on screen child, but woo lord shut the **** up.
18. Hail, Caesar!
This one came out way back in the beginning of the year, but I still smile a bit when I think of her. It was a Friday night in the late winter and everyone was out getting turnT but I decided to treat myself and went to see the new Coen Brothers film by my lonesome. If this had come out last month instead of last February, it might've been a slight Oscar contender. It makes me nostalgic for the early decades of Hollywood, even though my gay ass woulda been hate crimed before I had the chance to see any of these flicks. Shoutout to Alden Ehrenreich for playing the hunky cowboy with an accent. I was into it.
17. The Neon Demon
If ever a movie was scored solely on its GIF potential, it would be this one. Nicolas Winding Refn is better known for directing Drive, an infinitely better film than The Neon Demon. This movie is what I imagine an LSD trip is like when you're privileged and have no problems, the spooky Brock Turner of film. I was living for the visuals though, I mean, where else are you gonna get models covered in blood that isn't a James Franco art piece? Although the story was wack and the acting was a choice, this eye candy was exactly that: sweet, enticing, and just a little too light to fill me up. But I still had a lick
16. The Edge of Seventeen
A lot of film critics who are including this in their lists are accompanying it with the caveat that this isn't "typical teen dramedy" or "usual chick flick" as if I would've loved it any less if it were. Hailee Steinfeld proves, once again, that she is almost the same age as me but exponentially more beautiful and talented. She has a hit single right now, too? Somebody pop this bitch for me. She's killing the game on all fronts, and her performance here is lowkey Oscar-nomination worthy, not that AMPAS is going to do that. But enjoy your night at the Golden Globes hunny, I hope your momma lets you drink.
The Secret Life of Pets was really cute Still my least favorite animated film of the 3 I saw but the voice acting was great, the characters were loveable and I was interested in the journey.

ahhhhhhh asfjdsifksf
Ghostbusters was super fun, definitely a good, entertaining time. The trailers looked awful (not because of THOSE reasons, just the overall quality) but they surely came thru in the end.
The Edge of Seventeen looks awesome, really perched for a copy to float onto the internet.
This came out very recently, which is the only thing keeping me from ranking it higher (I know myself well enough to recognize I always go for the shiniest, newest thing). I'm not usually a big fan of the ethnic man whooping counting as a chorus (@ Focus), but it works here. Appropriation being sonically pleasing for once. I was talking to lovesong/minho and he, like me, fears whether or not the forthcoming album is going to be as good as this song. Even if it isn't, this song is easily one of the best of the xx's entire catalog. Whew, this probably deserves to be higher.
And every time I let you leave
I always saw you coming back to me
When and where did we go cold?
I thought I had you on hold
19. Chasing Shadows - Santigold
I give 'em my heart in words, will they remember me?
I'll leave 'em alone and time'll want to smother what I say
I round another year and wonder did I go someplace
I'm bucking this one down, this one right here won't walk away
I will go to my grave screaming that Santigold deserves more success than M.I.A. The self-producing maverick released her third album this year, and it's full of the sunniest harshness you've ever heard. Like much of the album, this song is dazzlingly bright but talks about her views on growing old in the music industry and feeling like her time of impact is almost up. Yet, it doesn't feel sad. It's not a woman bemoaning her lot in life, but a woman sitting at the bar battle scarred and drinking to the losses. She recognizes the fact that, in 100 years, nobody may remember her name. But guess what? Santigold don't give a ****.
18. (Don't) Wannabe - Kristin Kontrol
I FELT things to this song, holy ****. Kristin Kontrol (formerly of the Dum Dum Girls) is perfect at the current trend of icily heartfelt confessional ballads, but this one hit me because I was half-seeing this frat boy at the time I first heard it. Frat boy didn't want to date me, but he was putting on a front because he still wanted the goods. Yet after i respected myself and told him I was done, frat boy goes on and on about how lonely he is when he had a perfectly good hunty willing to date him (I've since realized he's garbage). This song was me trying to be his friend but also thinking "girl stop bitching" at him when he threw away SO many chances to be with people. But anyways the song is about this person she wants to date who doesn't wanna be with her, and she's annoyed that he won't look for someone else and keeps making her feel things. Men are evil.
My unhappiness offends me
Your unhappiness offends me too
Didn't we swear to be transparent?
Treading against an endless current
17. Used to Love You - Gwen Stefani
I don't know why I cry
But I think it's cause I remembered for the first time
Since I hated you
That I used to love you
B-but Citrus, this song was released in the fall of 2016! Well the album came out this year and this song was still one of my most played so oop! Plus a part of me just wants to remember when Gwen Stefani was a pop girl. Lyrically, this song is more reminiscent of the confessional, personal style of P!nk (particularly The Truth About Love track), but it totally works for Gwen. Her voice is dripping with genuine sadness and self-pity because of her inability to figure out why she's still reeling from this breakup. I would be sad too if I had that ugly ass combover.
16. Man on the Moon - Britney Spears
Earlier in the year, I wrote a really positive review of Glory for ATRL Magazine. As previously mentioned, I have a tendency to fall in love with music quickly and then only later realize how much I dislike it. While I maintain that Glory is a great pop album, very few of its tracks still get spin from me. Man on the Moon, tho...This fits in perfectly with Alien and Unusual You, the two masterpieces of her post Blackout discography. Breathy vocals, soft production, and extraterrestrial vibes that have me wondering if I'm playing Super Mario Galaxy, this song is a JAM. I couldn't find any legitimate audio on Youtube, so listen to Slumber Party I guess. Somebody has to.
Patience, darling, wait for the night
Darkness comes and love comes alive
I've been right here dreaming of you
Waiting for my man on the moon
