So, a lot of the dust has settled after the release of We Found Love, the lead single for Rihanna's new album. I'm sure the day it was released, there was an Only Girl (In the World) vs. We Found Love thread, but that's really not what I'm trying to accomplish here.
Upon hearing the two songs, one can immediately see parallels between the lead singles. However, there are also some immediate differences. We Found Love is dominated by Calvin Harris' production, whereas Rihanna's vocals completely reign over Only Girl. With We Found Love, one gets the feeling that they were shooting for a hybrid between Afrojack's Take Over Control and Robyn's Dancing On My Own. Immediately noticeable are the subdued vocals pumped with emotion, laid over a powerful and instantly infectious dance beat, even if they aren't masterfully carried out as in Dancing On My Own. With Only Girl (In the World), all that's immediately apparent is that we have a massive dance smash on our hands, filled with soaring vocals and packed with a confident and truthful Rihanna.
When We Found Love first came out, I really got the impression that they were reaching for that level of Dancing On My Own, throwing in the sound of Afrojack as an accessibility tool. Lately, however, I'm starting to think that they already did the job better with Only Girl (In the World). I thought the commanding vocals and equally (more) powerful StarGate production made it different, but after weeks of thought, I've realized that the vulnerability is still there. The emotion is the centerpiece of Only Girl.
Sure, the depressing undertones of We Found Love are a sharp departure from Only Girl, but maybe that's
why Only Girl succeeds in being the emotional dance floor anthem that We Found Love doesn't (for me). Only Girl fakes the intensely positive emotions and leaves the vulnerability hidden in the mix, while We Found Love only seeks to show off the latter. Where We Found Love is desperate to combine emotion and dance into a hit song, Only Girl combines emotion and dance into an
experience, and it does it with confidence.
Which song do you think succeeds? Which one makes you want to get on the dance floor and feel your emotions and acknowledge your insecurities?
