However, pre-written articles are needed because you want to be as detailed as possible for a death post (probably around 20-30 minutes for a decent article all about their accomplishments/controversies). By that time, a competitor has probably already posted it, and they get the clicks. A quick one paragraph/two paragraph article that basically says "Fidel Castro died. R.I.P. him" would be a mess.

I mean yeah, they are competing with a ton of other news outlets and want to break the news first, which is why they should post a mini article announcing the death asap, but wait a while to post a detailed article afterwards.
Most news outlets with integrity just break the news in a few lines and then post a longer article, detailing the person's life and achievements, at a later time. Also by doing this, mistakes are avoided.
