By that time, a competitor has probably already posted it, and they get the clicks. A quick one paragraph/two paragraph article that basically says "Fidel Castro died. R.I.P. him" would be a mess.

I don't see anything wrong with pre-written articles. Of course, these people should also be careful to proofread and omit any annotations before publishing nnn. These famous old people are going to die soon and you want to be prepared.
