If being gay is simply one's sexual orientation, why are certain behaviours and interests associated with the gay population?
If we don't really get in touch with our sexuality during puberty, why is it some parents claim they "always knew" that their child was gay since they were young? Surely young children don't have a sexual preference?
Why are the majority of the members on this site gay males, if being gay is just sexual orientation? Why is it that gay males seem to have more interest in pop music etc.? Why does one's sexual orientation appear to have an effect on their interests? And why is feminine behaviour associated with being gay?
To put it bluntly- why do gay people act "different" if the only difference is who they're attracted to?
I'd presume there's a biological aspect to part of it, as well as a social/modeling one - when you see a homosexual character on a television show they act a certain way so you think you should behave like that etc etc
I've always wondered this. Like I don't act any different just because I'm gay and I don't get how your sexual orientation correlates with your behaviour. In that sense I am "straight" acting I just happen to be attracted to guys. I've known I was gay since about 7.
In terms of the pop music, I guess societies gender ideologies and expectations mean straight guys see pop music as being more for girls, because it is heavily dominated by women. We kind of go against the "norm" so we see other genres as being for straight guys. If the majority of pop music comes from women singing about guys, then that is more relatable to us.
we could easily flip this on its head and make it about straight people
why do people act straight? why is it that the majority of straight guys like football and beer and cars?
we all grow up in diverse cultures, being able to identify with a group is an evolutionary survival mechanism - but gay kids grow up alone, they aren't exposed to a variety of gay lives, only limited stereotypes they see in the media, but this doesn't mean that liking pop music and being gay is bad in any way - its just a fact for all people. The same goes for races.
gay people live a society that teaches them that they are not allowed to identify with macho culture, they are gender role deviant and that excludes them from from the small cage of masculinity.
also gay people often have different brains, that think and work differently to straight people
I'd presuse there's a biological aspect to part of it, as well as a social/modeling one - when you see a homosexual character on a television show they act a certain way so you think you should behave like that etc etc
This kinda.
There's the way society affect things. Like why do people "act straight".
Gay people just act like they want because (heteronormative) gender norms do not fit them to begin with. The question is why do straight people act straight.
