I don't think it's a small minority though? There are loads of people that made a fuss about that NFL player kneeling during the national anthem, You can go on social media and see how many people are intensely patriotic.

It certainly is a vocal minority. And don't even use social media as a valid measure of anything. You could be looking at a 1,000 negative posts, but it would be wrong to say that is the opinion of over 320 million Americans.
You're literally talking about right-wing conservative republican Americans. They are loud, and what Americans and everyone else see as a stereotype.
