Am I the only one who doesn't understand why people use "basic and generic" as insults? Especially to people like Katy Perry and Selena Gomez?
I mean not everyone has to be innovative like Madonna and Michael Jackson. We all have a certain role in the industry. There are innovative artists like Britney, Bey, Gaga, Madonna, MJ etc. then there are the non innovative kind like Katy Perry, Selena Gomez etc.
Is it really that bad to be basic and generic? The GP doesn't seem to have a problem with it. So why is it considered an insult?
I am sorry but Gaga and Britney are not innovative artists or they have ideas to change the game. Their teams have and their teams are (Well in Gaga'as case they DID, they don't exist anymore and we can see the aftermath). Simple as that.

Just no.
um before Britney the only big female pop artist in the 90s was Madonna after Britney female pop artists started coming out more
yet the only ppl who have a problem with that is this forum. The GP doesnt give a **** if you're innovative unless you're Michael Jackson and Madonna.
Cause most of the general public aren't into music as much as people here....and the people here aren't that much into it either they're just here for catchy songs or sales.

and even Madonna and Michael Jackson have generic songs, but people seem to forget that
I mean
"are you ok, annie? annie are you ok? are you ok? Annie?"

Chill the **** out. This is a music froum and people have all the right to comment on things in a way they want to. If they would be the GP you are talking about they wouldn't be here so sush

Exactly. Madonna's last 2 albums are her most generic this is the same woman who released Ray of Light and Evita
It's like taking a shorter, less complicated route to success. You know, like following a formula that already works and using it all the time, instead taking risks or chances.
I mean, obviously artist who are going to be prone to taking more risks and not following a set "formula" will be more respected in the long run.
The problem comes in when said stans of these "generic" artists go head to head with the innovative artists. Generic sells really well , and since it's been done before it acts as sort of a bread and butter for an artist. Fans of the innovative artists will not respect the generic artists because in their eyes that artist has taken the easy route. Someone with a catalogue of risky smash hit singles/albums will look far more impressive than an artist with basic radio tailored hits, it also carries the negative connotation that the artist doesn't care that much about their music.

Those are the most iconic lyrics in the world so just sit.
Just because Teenage Dream had amazing pop songs that were so ubiquitous it's suddenly basic and generic? Who says so? If it's so basic, why was it nominated for Album of the year?
