X Factor steady with Night 2, slips a bit
Quote:
Simon Cowell made a solid return to Fox last night, but his new show The X Factor was no match for the Dunphys and Pritchetts (and a far cry from American Idol).
X Factor debuted to 12.1 million viewers and a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating, while ABC’s Emmy-winning Modern Family delivered 14.3 million viewers and a whopping 6.0 rating. The reality competition drew about half the audience of the most recent season opener of American Idol (which delivered about 26 million viewers and a 9.7 in the demo), a point of comparison that’s inevitable, but also arguably unfair given the top-rated legacy of the other show (though Cowell himself invited the comparison in July, when he suggested to reporters that the new show might top Idol).
X Factor was significantly higher, however, than the debut of NBC’s fall singing competition The Sing Off, and was higher than the debut of Hell’s Kitchen in the slot last year. While a one-hour Modern Family not only won the night, but was up 18 percent from its premiere last fall.

Those numbers are disappointing considering the hype
Quote:
Premiere meltdown Thursday unveiled 10 season debuts plus several crucial second episodes of the fall. Some initial first-glance key results: ABC’s Charlie’s Angeles opened somewhat modest with 8.7 million viewers and a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating, the second night of Fox’s The X Factor held nearly steady with 12.1 million viewers and a 4.1 rating and NBC’s Prime Suspect disappointed with 6 million and 1.8.
Let’s go network by network and break this down. Fox won the night with X Factor, off by only a tenth of a point from Wednesday night’s preliminary rating (which was later adjusted higher to a 4.4). Showing this strong retention for the second episode is definitely good news for Fox and Simon Cowell.
On CBS, a one-hour Big Bang Theory (14.4 million, 4.9) was stable with last fall’s premiere and also won the night. The premiere of J.J. Abrams’ new thriller Person of Interest (13.2 million, 3.1) had a solid number, but was down 9 percent from the debut of CSI in the time period last year. At 10 p.m., the return of The Mentalist (13.3 million, 2.8) was down 18 percent from last fall despite its Red John finale cliffhanger.
ABC’s Charlie’s Angels has a borderline, but still workable, number. The reinvention of the 1970s classic was up 31 percent from the premiere of short-lived My Generation in the slot last fall. The two-hour return of Grey’s Anatomy (10.3 million, 4.1) was down 24 percent from last year, yet still tied X Factor for second place for the night after Big Bang.
Tons more to come, refresh for latest… Grey’s Anatomy, Big Bang Theory, Person of Interest, The Mentalist. Community, Parks & Recreation, The Office, Whitney. Vampire Diaries, Secret Circle.

And I missed MF and the new Lily for this. Well, it wasn't a bad episode, but I was at least hoping for 20M

I thought the same, but I barely like any audition round of any show. It'll pick up once the contestants are chosen, or so im hoping.

No, you can't compare the ratings of an established brand. He's referring to it's 1st episode.
