Got to give serious props to X-Tina. She pushes the envelope like no other mainstream female pop star of her size and stature. When you compare the sort of consistent risks she takes with changing up her with her sound and image to others of a similar status, she defintely feels like the one who takes the most and biggest chances. I remember "Dirrty" nearly killing her career in the US, with all the controversy around her in the video, and it flopping in the American charts. Luckily "Dirrty" became a worldwide smash
And the truth is, she doesn't really have to take all these off-the-beaten track chances. She could keep on singing retreads of "Beautiful" for the rest of her career, and most of her fanbase would probably go along with it. I can't even begin t imagine what a track with Christina Aguilera and M.I.A would sound like...they are just polar opposites in every respect. Should be exciting to hear what they've cooked up

I'm sorry but I don't see this as being incredibly risky at all. She's working with artists that all have cult followings. I think she just wants to spread her name out by working with all of these different artists who are respected in their specific genres. There's nothing wrong with that, but if anything I think Christina is taking the safe route by associating herself with these other artists instead of coming out swinging on her own.

Since when have cult followings transalated into sales? MIA, Santigold, and Ladytron are not big sellers at all. Christina is not a "cult artist". She's judged on how many records she sells.
The reason this is risky, is because this project could flop horribly. If all those X-Tina fans, who would rather she stuck to stuff like "Beautiful" or even more conventional uptempo pop like "Fighter" listen to these weird ass "cult muscians" and their X-Tina collabos, and they think it's just too strange for her...they might not buy the album.
Christina is this generations "the voice". That's what her fanbase is built on. This sounds like a project that's less about showing how big her vocal range is, but about the type of experimental sounds she can work with, to make different sort of music. I can easily see a lot of casual X-Tina fans being turned off by the direction she's taking in.
So yes, I think it's a huge risk. If she wants to keep up with the Beyonce's and Britney's and Rhianna's of this world, she's riaking alienating a lot of people who rate her because she's like a young Mariah or Whitney.

I never mentioned sales. Christina knows she's fading, point blank. She's working with these people and constantly name-dropping for the sake of buzz. People have been counting her out since 06.

That's my point. She takes risks with her commercial status (which is a major deal, imho) because she's more interested in "respect" than sales (and it's not as if she doesn't already have respect. She's wins Grammy's with every record she releases). She wants to be remembered as someone who actually did stuff worth remembering. Of course she's dropping these names to build buzz. She doesn't want to sell nothing. But these names only appeal to a select audience.
If X-tina wanted guaranteed, platinum hits, and # 1 singles, she could do that very, very easily. Just wheel out a generic pop/R&B-crossover album, with guest rapping from Lil Wayne and Drake or whomever the latest hot MC is. And production from Kanye or Timbaland. Or maybe a hot Ryan Tedder produced/written Ballad (since that's what almost every other girl who actually has a decent voice has done).
The reason people claim she's "fading" is because she never does the easy predictable thing that a pop star of her calibre should do, to stay as big as possible. You can tell she's trying to build a body of work that not only can she be proud of, but that is diverse and interesting as well..

I actually agree with you. As much as she bothers me, I'm excited to hear this new project--all these producers are so different from each other and it could either sound like a hot mess or it could be a masterpiece.

Christina's real problem lies in the fact that she disappears for years in between her albums. Yeah, I know you can't rush art but if she's truly an artist it shouldn't feel so forced. In this case, this album seems very forced. I like the idea of working with a lot of eccentric musicians but it also feels like she's copping out and disguising her lack of inspiration by letting all these other people carry the slack.
