Remember what happened after the grammys ? Adele sold TONS of albums and most of her singles where all in the top5. Promo boost albums sales AND singles, that's how Poker Face reached 6x platinum

General public gets sick of an era at a point of it,it's not like the success is going to stay stable even with much promo. And '21' era haven't reached that point yet. Easy,simple. And Adele wasn't appearing on TV much,medias weren't giving much importance to her, unlike Gaga.
And public makes what they like successful, and what they don't like a flop.
