I don't think you understood exactly what I meant. For example, when Madonna dressed as Marilyn and made a song lyrically similar to "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" (that's "Material Girl" by the way) she was making fun of the "decade of greed", and the video (if you pay attention to the whole thing) was a rejection of that culture.
The same thing with the "Express Yourself" music video. Fritz Lang made a film about oppression, and Madonna twisted that point to promote her feminist ideals (i.e. breaking free from female oppression imagery like being chained to the bed, or licking from the bowl of milk, or crawling under the table). I also believe the oppressed working men represented gay people (even though she has sex with one in the end, which I think shows both her sexual freedom AND her relationship with the gay community).
It's the same with "Vogue" (drag balls/ Horst), her Old Hollywood style, "Justify My Love" (French art-house films of the late '70s), the Girlie Show (Dietrich), "Hollywood", "Confessions..." (Donna Summer/John Travolta) and most recently "Beautiful Killer" (Alain Delon).
Gaga, however, simply imitates. She eats the zeitgeist of another time and throws it up on a new generation.
Madonna and Gaga may take influence from some of the same people, but Madonna used (and still uses) it FAR more intelligently.
