Except my hillbilly area. I'm in north-central Illinois 2 hours or so out of Chicago. Also, I'm in the most Republican city in the state I bet. It's a pretty nice area, though, there's some nice towns and cities nearby.

It seems like there's a huge political divide between the Chicago area and the rest of Illinois politically.
The south is the worst area in terms of LGBT rights.
A state government that doesn't recognize that LGBT people deserve the same rights as other people (essentially dehumanizing them) is a state that inherently has more homophobia. The government says it's okay to treat LGBT persons as less than people, so the general public does, too. (Note I say "general public," not everyone.)

There's a reason why I said "generally" later on in the post and even pointed out that I said "generally." Your "not necessarily" just proves my point.
Any St. Louisians? Sure, the city isn't particularly glamorous or bustling, but in the past few years I've developed an appreciation for the area that I didn't have growing up.
