Very true, which goes back to what I was saying about people not liking it when artists don't bend to their every whim. In mainstream America, the current trend is to create songs that require no thought nor stepping outside the boundaries of what is normal; to achieve a hit, all you need to is suck a producer's dick and write a song with lyrics about... literally nothing. Add a verse about sex, a pre-chorus about getting high, and a chorus that is either meaningless or insipid and you will be respected. Same thing with "my life is perfect" feel-good love songs.
Meanwhile, if you step outside the boundaries, and create a song about religion, or sexuality, or politics, and especially if you infuse it with elements of other kinds of music, then people suddenly become uncomfortable with you and say "How dare a mainstream artist not do exactly as I want her to, create a song about getting crunk?"
Not that there's anything wrong with liking that kind of music, of course, but it's so odd that people respect those who sell out completely over those who try to do something different and work hard to achieve that goal.
Of course, then there are also those, like most of us, who respect what Lady Gaga does and appreciate her and even like her a lot.
And that is why Lady Gaga, at the onset of her career, was the most iconic artist in years and continues to be perhaps the world's biggest global phenomenon.
Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex, and vital.
