Catholic group in the Philippines wants Gaga concert stopped
Quote:
MANILA, Philippines -- A religious group is praying the upcoming concerts of Grammy winner Lady Gaga in Manila will not push through.
The group called Biblemode Youth Philippines is leading a campaign to have the flamboyant female artist banned in the Philippines. It said it will start a prayer vigil on Saturday until Gaga arrives in Manila for her two-night concert on May 21 and 22 to open the SM Arena.
This will be Lady Gaga's second visit to Manila, who staged her first concert at the Araneta Coliseum years back.
Calling Gaga the "anti-Christ," the group criticized Gaga for her skimpy costumes and provocative songs, such as "Judas," which the group said is a direct insult to Jesus Christ.
"Yung kanyang paggamit ng imagery at mga lyrics na direktang lumalaban sa Panginoon, 'yun ang hindi namin kinikilala," Pastor Reyzel Cayanan of Biblemode Youth told ABS-CBN News.
Renen de Guia of Ovation Productions Inc., the promoter of Lady Gaga's concerts in Manila, quickly dismissed the group's claim that the artist is the anti-Christ.
"Walang katotohanan na anti-Christ si Lady Gaga. Artists constantly reinvent themselves and want to be controversial," de Guia said in a statement.
"Those who criticize Lady Gaga are the ones who won't be watching her concert anyway," de Guia also said.
The Bible group's campaign comes a day after the American singer was refused a permit in Indonesia, where she is scheduled to perform in Jakarta on June 3. Indonesian police said cited security concerns after Islamic groups voiced strong objections to her "vulgar" style.

The Mayor of Pasay (the city where the BTW Ball will be held) was also asked to monitor the controversial concert.
Quote:
MANILA, Philippines – A lawyer on Friday said he will meet with Pasay City Mayor Antonio Calixto to air his concerns over the upcoming concert of controversial singer Lady Gaga.
Atty. Romulo Macalintal said he is scheduled to meet Calixto at the Pasay City Hall at around 10:30 a.m. today to deliver his letter asking the government to monitor the concert. Lady Gaga is holding 2 concerts at The Arena at the SM Mall of Asia complex in Pasay on May 21 and 22.
He said this is “to ensure the show will not violate or make a mockery of [the Catholic] religion.”
Lady Gaga always gets media attention for her unusual and sometimes over the top costumes during events.
She particularly earned the ire of conservative Catholics when she released her single “Judas”.
Macalintal said the song and its music video were sacrligeous.
He added a Lady Gaga concert could destroy the moral fiber of the youth in a predominantly Catholic country such as the Philippines.
Lady Gaga’s concert was recently cancelled in Indonesia after strong opposition from conservative Islamic groups.
“Sa Indonesia at sa South Korea, pinrotesta na iyan sapagakat may mga very controversial at Satanic lyrics ang kanyang inaawit,” Macalintal said.
“Sa Indonesia, ang sabi doon, dineny nila ang permit because she is a very controversial person and it threateans to destroy children’s sense of morality. Tayo bang Pilipino hindi pwedeng gawin ito?” he added.
Macalintal said he will ask Calixto to also revise the permit it gave to the organizers so that it can invoke Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, which penalizes “immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions, and indecent shows.”
The lawyer said any person found violating this law may be imprisoned from 6 to 12 months.
Aside from Macalintal, other Christian groups have expressed their opposition against the two concerts.
Biblemode Youth Philippines described the artist as “anti-Christ”. It said it will start a prayer vigil on Saturday until Gaga arrives in Manila for her two-night concert.
