Gender expert: "Gaga critics are hypocritical, strange"
Quote:
Gender expert Mariana Amiruddin says that the accusations certain groups make against U.S. pop singer Lady Gaga when they say that the artist violates morals with her "erotic" and "****ographic" artistry are strange, and that the negative claims people make about her are hypocritical.
"I don't understand how people can accuse her of violating ****ography laws when she hasn't even performed in Indonesia. If people want to sue her for violating our ****ography laws [Law No. 44/2008 on ****ography], they should first buy tickets so that they can see whether she is being ****ographic," Mariana told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
"And for all we know, she might actually dress as a boy when she performs in Indonesia. Where will the ****ography be in that? Or she might even dress up in a kebaya. After all, she is very well-versed in culture."
Mariana was referring to comments by people like Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto, who said that "Lady Gaga indulges in revealing her body, dancing erotically and encouraging ****ography".
Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) chairman Neta S. Pane had also endorsed the police's position, saying that the police had every right to refuse performance permits for artists in the event that a show or artist was deemed inappropriate, because they answered to the law, "which includes laws against ****ography".
Mariana said that the police and experts misuse the name of the law in instances like this.
"Of course, when authorities say anything related to 'the law', most people automatically lose their ability to critically think. The problem is that most people don't know the laws, so they accept the claims of people abusing 'the law' at face value," Mariana said.
"Besides, post-election celebrations in various regions can be very sensual and erotic. Why don't the police use the law to crack down on that? Traditional Indonesian forms of expression can also be sensual, but the police don't seem to care much about that."
Mariana also said that Lady Gaga's act is more about identity in general and less about the LGBT community. In that case, Mariana added, why did people focus on the her homosexuality aspect?
"It's not like she will magically transform people to be more like her. Her fans haven't suddenly changed their sexualities because of her," said Mariana, who is chief editor of the academic journal on gender issues, Perempuan.
Back in the 1980s, Mariana noted that Indonesians listened to artists like George Michael and Queen, and that today nobody had any problems with artists like Morrissey, who often took his shirt off when he performed.
"It makes me suspicious that the banning of Lady Gaga has more to do with her being a woman than anything else. There are groups who are offended by the idea of a woman who doesn't fit in with their traditional views," Mariana said.
The National Police said on Tuesday that they would not issue a permit for the singer’s planned June 3 concert at Bung Karno Main Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, one of the first of many stops in her “Born This Way” world tour.
More than 50,000 tickets have been sold for Lady Gaga's show since selling opened on March 10, 12,000 of which were bought by foreign tourists from places like Australia and the Philippines, according to Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry data
