Yeah, I get exactly where you're coming from, and I think the same as you do. Many people don't realise that gender is a social construct, they just see biological men/women and take that for granted. That's why Tom coming out as Laura's a good thing, hopefully it'll re-assess people's understandings. The transgender community really lacks figureheads- I can only think of Chaz Bono, and Nadia from Big Brother UK. I remember my first experience around a transgendered person- he was born female but recognised himself as male. It was difficult for me at first to know what to say/do in order to be polite, because I just didn't know, as I didn't have any previous experience around the transgender community. So really I think it's just a case in the wider community of getting that understanding out there.
