BREAKING NEWS: Spins on last week’s #1 and #2 Pop singles—Nickelback’s “Far Away” and JoJo’s “Too Little, Too Late,” on UMG-distributed labels Roadrunner and Blackground—were spiked by ad buys on Entercom stations specifically prohibited by UMG’s $12 million settlement with NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. The story was broken by N.Y. Times reporter Jeff Leeds. UMG said it was unaware of these ad buys, which were made by Roadrunner and Blackground. In a March lawsuit filed against Entercom, Spitzer alleged that the chain marketed its “CD Preview” program, which aired the JoJo and Nickelback ads, explicitly as a means to manipulate a song’s performance on airplay charts. Entercom declined to comment to Leeds yesterday.
