This is something I've always wondered, why is mediatraffic and other sites the stans use seen as reliable? The labels, tv shows etc always say our faves sold more than what those sites show, where did they come from? Who does them? This is just out of curiosity
People only use them because it shows their faves in the best light. Whether they're credible or not doesn't matter to the delusional fans, as long as they look like they best receipts.

Those outlets use inflated numbers (and occasionally semi-accurate ones) to make the person their promoting bigger than what they are. It's a common media trick. People eat it up (sans us) because they're too lazy to look up every last number of so and so album(s) have sold in reality.

The most logical and valid point EVER made on ATRL, coming from a user with 6 posts.
Sometimes labels can be on point with the numbers, sometimes they can exaggerate and inflate things. I know times when Bey makes TV show appearances sometimes the host introduces her as selling 75M albums solo...
The sites like MediaTraffic are just Europeans with a lot of time on their hands... They base sales around certifications and weekly chartings, but they can be off too considering that they can't track every sale possible & they leave out countries. But they've been doing it so long that it comes natural for them and a lot of the times their numbers can match up with what the label says an album sold. It's pretty impressive, but nothing to put 100% faith in.
My 2 cents

I mean, I've had Duca sit up here and say Music Box sold 6M less than what Billboard, RIAA, Publications, etc have quoted, using Mediatraffic as a receipt, and then he'll turn around and say BOMT sold 26M, using anything BUT Mediatraffic as a receipt

I think I've answered this question completely wrong

And why would anyone believe the figures fed to press outlets by the artist's label/management? You know Nicole Scherzinger's team is somewhere making up 8 figure sales for an album that's never being released in the US. Let's be sensible about this. There's no incentive for the labels report these figures honestly.
I'm more inclined to trust an outside source (one that's reputable) that has no need to tamper with numbers.
