Her song lyrics aren't personable enough for a lot of people. She uses a lot of metaphors and imagery, particularly using subjects (death, the fantastical) that a lot of people wouldn't enjoy. She gets a lot of flack for that last one from the music press, a fair number who don't seem to take her music seriously because of it (even as they praise her singing abilities)
And a lot of the songs run on too long to be radio friendly, as others have said.
It's basically poetry. If they don't like analyzing lyrics, that's their loss.
