LoL gets its popularity from being the first to do the free-to-play business model which made it a lot easier to attract new players than HoN.
Before, you couldn't access the full features of HoN without paying $30 for an account. That's a lot of money for a game you don't know if you'll like or stick with for a considerable period of time.
LoL always had the popularity advantage because it was free and easy to get in. The other side of this is that it isn't a great game. It's designed and built around casual gamers with lots of flaws. It's not in the big leagues.
DoTA 2 is flopping as well, as Dei referenced, but it's still pretty much in its infancy. There's no real argument to play LoL over the other MOBAs. They all offer more and are better in multiple facets.
1800 elo on there is like 1200 on EW
