Alexz Johnson: Skipping Stones EP Review
Review by Sean C
Alexz Johnson’s new EP Skipping Stone came out on January 24th, and once again Alexz has proven herself to be a strong songwriter and vocalist. This EP really shows how much Alexz has grown as an independent artist, releasing the music that she loves. This EP has gotten a lot of great reviews from her fans, and I can see why.
One of the most heartfelt songs is “Skipping Stone.” This song is heartbreak at its prime. Alexz really touched hearts with the lyrics, music, and her voice. The melody to this song is absolutely phenomenal. She recently released a music video for this song which you can watch on her website (www.alexzjohnson.com) or on youtube. The words to this song are very touching, and very relatable to many, many people. This song is one just asking to be repeated on your iPod.
One of my favorites on this EP is “Walking;” this is an amazing song. It talks about someone who’s realizing that they can’t be with the person that they love, having to leave is going to be hard, but it’s something they have to do. The verse that really got me was “What was I thinking? Been lying to myself all along. And I knew I was wrong, I can tell in your eyes the love is gone. And I know I can’t fix what I have done, so I’ll keep walking til I’m numb.” This song is very personal, and very beautiful.
An awesome song is “Give Me Fire”. The beat and rhythm are fun and awesome. The words are very authentic and real. The rhyming is great! This is a fun one to sign along to, I’ve often caught myself walking on the street singing “give me fire, give me fire, coming out, it’s coming out!” I love this song.
The song “Thief” is absolutely incredible. This is one of my favorite melodies that Alexz has written. The rhythm is really cool, and the words are so true! My favorite part of this song is the chorus, the vocals are really…inspiring…I guess I could say. I’m not really sure why, it may just be me. I love it.
“Pleased to Meet You” is different from the rest of the songs. It has a different feel to it, but nevertheless it’s just as beautiful. “Angels guide my step, you keep my eyelids from getting wet. I’m pleased to meet you but I swear we’ve met.” With lyrics like these you can’t help but be pulled to listen to more. When Alexz writes lyrics, she really knows how to hit your music side, and boy has she hit it!
Portrait gives Alexz Johnson’s EP a big thumbs up. This EP is a must for your iPod. 5 stars, the whole shizam. Skipping Stone is streaming now at alexzjohnson.com and will be available to purchase early February. So what are you waiting for? Go give your ears what they’ve been waiting for!
